The Mehta Boys is a Funny, Trying and Impossible Drama

A father son relationship is fraught with many unhealed moments in #TheMehtaBoys. And a bereaved Boman Irani’s introductory scene where he barely acknowledges his son after the death of his wife sets the tone. You know the perils that lie ahead. While the spunky older sister tries to smooth the rough edges, the father-son duo won’t let up. Boman Irani and Avinash Tiwary in The Mehta Boys Amay played expertly by Avinash Tiwary is an architect waiting for his big Eureka moment. The cantankerous but lovely father harbours a few grouses. The father after his wife’s death is on his way to Tampa, Florida to live with his older daughter. But there’s a change in plan and he’s forced to spend two days with his recalcitrant son.There are no great surprises here. But Boman Irani’s debut directorial leaves a gnawing pit in the stomach. There is a moment in The Mehta Boys when Boman Irani‘s character is frantically typing his will days after his wife’s death as he is about to leave the house he has spent all his life in. As his daughter pleads for him to stop till they get ‘home’, Boman’s character screams, ‘This is home!’ The way his voice breaks and his eyes water when he says it makes you realise how no director has truly utilised this man’s talent.
