Kookie Gulati on giving Saif Ali Khan’s Jewel Thief a Bollywood spin

Kookie Gulati on giving Saif Ali Khan’s Jewel Thief a Bollywood spin

Gloss, style, and scale are not lacking in Jewel Thief: The Heist Begins, but many feel the Saif Ali Khan and Jaideep Ahlawat-led crime caper has neither the smarts nor the taut storytelling expected of the genre. Kookie Gulati, who has helmed the Netflix film with Robbie Grewal, isn’t perturbed by the audience’s mixed reactions. The director shares that he was brought on board by producers Siddharth and Mamta Anand to design it as a “commercial entertainer”, a count he has delivered on. “At some point in the shoot, they realised that they wanted it to be more of a Bollywood commercial entertainer with glamour and songs. The makers thought I could bring that to the film. That’s when I took over from Robbie, who had other commitments that were overlapping with the shoot. If I came on board, I had to make it mine. [We] added three more songs. I also rewrote parts of the script, and shot many action pieces, including Jaideep and Saif’s confrontation.” Kookie Gulati Jewel Thief sees Saif Ali Khan …

Jewel Thief joins Bollywood’s continuing struggle to make a good heist film | Bollywood News

It’s sacrilege that Jewel Thief, starring Saif Ali Khan, Jaideep Ahlawat, Nikita Dutta, and Kunal Kapoor, shares its name with perhaps the most iconic heist film ever made in India, Vijay Anand’s Jewel Thief. The OG Jewel Thief, whose cast included Dev Anand, Ashok Kumar, Vyajayanthimala and Tanuja, blended characteristics of a conventional heist film with elements of a crime thriller. As I watched the new Jewel Thief, which is strangely both loud and lackluster, I couldn’t help but wonder why Bollywood has not been able to make a crackling heist story. A stylish, slick entertainer like an Ocean’s 11, or an intense, violent interpretation like Reservoir Dogs. While we have made remakes like Kaante, or taken inspiration from Hollywood films like Fast and Furious for the Dhoom series, there are very few Bollywood heist films that are rooted in an Indian milieu or have relatable characters and motivations. There are a few exceptions, like Aankhen (2002), which was based on the Gujarati play Aandhlo Pato and Special 26, which was based on an actual …

Jewel Thief movie review: Saif Ali Khan`s heist drama is more of a snooze fest

Jewel Thief movie review: Saif Ali Khan`s heist drama is more of a snooze fest

Jewel ThiefOn: NetflixDir: Kookie Gulati, Robbie GrewalCast: Saif Ali Khan, Jaideep Ahlawat, Nikita DuttaRating: 2/5 When I first watched Dhoom 2 (2006), I knew I am a sucker for a good movie that’s packaged with rizzy leads, witty banter, suave villains, and a dollop of pizzazz! Since then, I have called this genre of movies Sexy Action. In the past few years, the one man who has cracked the formula is Siddharth Anand. His visuals are so sumptuous that one almost forgets to check the plot. Think of Hrithik Roshan’s entry sequence in War (2019). There is hardly anything else you would remember from that film. I wish the same could be said about Jewel Thief—The Heist Begins. Since smarts are hardly expected of the film, it should at least have been one of those breezy date-night viewings. Instead, Anand’s team—directors Robbie Grewal and Kookie Gulati—serve us a snooze fest. The faces are still gorgeous, but the story simply never soars! At one point in the film, I caught myself thinking, perhaps Anand shouldn’t have …
