Thierry Henry praises Cape Verde’s belief after World Cup heroics

3 min readJul 4, 2026 01:45 PM IST The aftermath of Argentina’s 3-2 victory over Cape Verde in the World Cup Round of 32 game was all applause for the African nation, following an incredible showing against the defending world champions and for pushing them to the limit. French Legend Thierry Henry was full of praise for the World Cup debutants, considering how this small nation exceeded every expectation at their first World Cup. It required a goal and an assist from Lionel Messi, to take the Argentinians forward in the tournament and prevent one of the greatest upsets in World Cup history. “You know what’s actually impressive? It is not so much on how they played and everything, which is impressive, but the number of people who live there,” said Henry on Fox Sports‘ post match show. The Arsenal icon heaped a lot of praise towards the Cape Verde’s players and manager, being impressed by their passion, grit and ever present ‘never give up’ mentality. Reflecting on the Cape Verdeans’ performance against the South …

Thierry Henry reveals the Messi trait fans overlook

Former Barcelona forward Thierry Henry has lifted the lid on what made Lionel Messi different, insisting the Argentine’s greatness was built on far more than natural talent. Speaking on Rio Ferdinand’s YouTube channel, Henry said the public often focuses on Messi’s gifts while overlooking the obsession and discipline that underpinned one of football’s most decorated careers. “What bothers me is people always talk about how great he is,” Henry said. “But the way he goes about his life.” Henry pointed to Messi’s physical condition as an example of an area that is frequently ignored. “Have you seen his body?” he asked. “People always talk about talent. They work. They work hard. You know, he thinks football. He’s possessed.” The Frenchman, who spent three seasons alongside Messi at Barcelona, recalled witnessing first-hand the evolution of a player who refused to rely solely on ability. One of the clearest examples, Henry said, was Messi’s transformation into one of football’s deadliest free-kick takers. Thierry Henry on Portugal’s Ronaldo-sized issue: ‘Team needs to score, not you’ | Football News

3 min readJun 18, 2026 06:40 AM IST Cristiano Ronaldo has earned critique for the way he played in Portugal’s first game of the FIFA World Cup 2026. Ronaldo endured a lacklustre day in the park at the Houston Stadium as the game against Congo ended in a 1-1 draw with Joao Neves’s 6th minute goal getting cancelled out by Yoane Wisse’s strike in the first half. Ronaldo, as the tip of the spear for Portugal’s attack, could not do much, despite playing for most of the game. In fact, there was a point (in the 68th minute) when Francisco Conceicao cut back to Ronaldo, and the forward hit his shot wide off the near post. The moment was criticised for Ronaldo taking a shot when behind him Bruno Fernandes was in a better position to score. French football legend Thierry Henry has explained why Portugal have a Ronaldo-sized problem, even though the former Arsenal striker avoided directly criticising Ronaldo, one of the greatest footballers in history. “One thing that’s important, people, please at home, …

With Barcelona trailing by two goals in the match, Yamal scored the first goal in the team’s 3-3 draw to create history. Former France striker and World Cup winner Thierry Henry has showered praise on the young Spanish international and terming him as the next best player in the football world and even better than Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. “We can talk about a lot of guys who are supposed to be on the throne and whatnot. But one thing that amazes me about football is that you always think there is no way someone is going to be better – or might be better – than Messi and (Cristiano) Ronaldo. Or in my time, Pele or (Diego) Maradona… And then Yamal arrives,” …

Thierry Henry Reveals Battle With Depression Throughout His Career

Arsenal and France legend Thierry Henry has revealed he suffered with depression during his stellar playing career. The 46-year-old, who won the World Cup with France and is Arsenal’s all-time top goal-scorer, told the Diary of a CEO podcast that the coronavirus pandemic made him appreciate his mental health struggles as he cried “almost every day.” Henry has linked that to his past and a search for approval from his father, who was often critical of his performances as a young player. “Throughout my career, and since I was born, I must have been in depression,” said Henry. “Did I know it? No. Did I do something about it? No. But I adapted to a certain way. That doesn’t mean I’m walking straight, but I’m walking. You’ve got to put one foot (forward) and another one, and walk. That’s what I’ve been told since I’m young. “I never stopped walking, then maybe I would have realised. (But during) Covid – I stopped walking. I couldn’t. Then you start to realise.” Henry was in charge of …
