India moving towards becoming third-largest economy in near future: Prez Murmu

President Droupadi Murmu on Sunday said India is the world`s fastest-growing major economy and is moving towards achieving its goal of becoming the third-largest economy in the near future, despite global uncertainties. In her address to the nation on the eve of the 77th Republic Day, she said the country is recording continuous economic growth, driven by large-scale investments in world-class infrastructure and guided by the principles of `atmanirbharata` and `swadeshi`. “By investing in the creation of world-class infrastructure, we are rebuilding our economic strength at a much larger scale,” she said, adding that India is shaping its economic destiny through self-reliance and indigenous capabilities. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Wednesday, in his address at the World Economic Forum, stressed that India is poised to become the world`s third-largest economy in the next few years, driven by a decade of “well thought-through” structural changes and focused execution, news agency ANI reported. Vaishnaw highlighted a trajectory where the nation is expected to maintain a real growth rate of 6 to 8 per cent. He attributed this momentum to four strategic pillars: massive public investment in physical, digital, and social infrastructure; inclusive growth ensuring the “entire society grows along with the growth of the country”; a push for manufacturing and innovation; and a rigorous drive toward simplification, ANI reported.  The Union Railway Minister further highlighted, “All this, combined with the base of technology that we have put in, we can very clearly say that India is going to grow with a 95 per cent confidence interval in the next five years,” while adding that security of the poorest comes as a priority. India has overtaken Germany to become the world’s third-largest producer of electricity from wind and solar energy in 2024, according to a new report by energy think tank Ember. Wind and solar accounted for 10% of India’s electricity last year, with solar alone contributing 7%. New Delhi: India emerged as the world’s third-largest producer of electricity from wind and solar energy in 2024, surpassing Germany, according to the latest edition of Ember’s Global Electricity Review, released on Tuesday. The report by the global energy think tank shows that wind and solar together accounted for 15 per cent of global electricity generation last year. India’s share stood at 10 per cent. In a significant milestone, low-carbon sources—including renewables and nuclear—contributed 40.9 per cent of global electricity generation in 2024. This marks the first time the global share of clean power crossed the 40 per cent threshold since the 1940s. Mumbai: India is on track to become the third-largest economy by fiscal 2030-31, driven by a robust projected annual growth rate of 6.7 per cent, a report by S&P Global projected on Thursday. The country has emerged as the fastest-growing large economy at an 8.2 per cent growth rate in FY24, significantly exceeding the government’s earlier estimate of 7.3 per cent. According to the report, infrastructure development and geopolitical strategies will play an important role in maximising trade benefits. “India’s medium-term prospects are healthy and filled with opportunities in multiple sectors including trade, agriculture, and AI, likely structural reforms and growing energy demands,” said Abhishek Tomar, Head-S&P Global India Leadership Council.
