Nintendo blocks some third-party Switch 2 docks, but isn’t saying why

Nintendo blocks some third-party Switch 2 docks, but isn’t saying why

Nintendo recently issued an update (21.0.0) for its Switch 2 console that, in addition to some small changes, has caused some third-party docks to stop working as intended. In the early weeks and months of the console’s availability this summer, companies raced to figure out the right commands, the right power draw, and the right chips to use in order to trick the Switch 2 into thinking it had connected to the real thing — Nintendo’s dock, which is included with every console. Now, some of them will have to figure out how to do it again. You’re not alone if you think Nintendo did this on purpose. But did it? According to Nintendo, not exactly. Gaming site Kotaku published a new statement from the company that says it “does not have any intention to hinder or invalidate legal third-party dock compatibility.” Read in one way, it seems like Nintendo didn’t intend to cause these issues with its latest update. Read another way, Nintendo has apparently established that there’s a legal and an illegal way …

WhatsApp is launching third-party chat integration in Europe

WhatsApp is launching third-party chat integration in Europe

Meta is on the cusp of launching third-party integration with WhatsApp in Europe — something that’s required by the Digital Markets Act (DMA). It’s rolling out “over the coming months” with WhatsApp’s level of end-to-end encryption (E2EE) maintained. Meta says that BirdyChat and Haiket will be the first third-party services to implement messaging interoperability with WhatsApp. No, we haven’t heard of them either, but that’s what leveling the playing field looks like. WhatsApp users in Europe will eventually see a notification in the settings tab that will explain how to opt-in to third party messaging. It will work in WhatsApp for iOS and Android, but not on desktops, web, or tablets. Meta says that “third-party messaging apps must use the same level of E2EE as WhatsApp,” and Meta can’t see encrypted messages in transit. Content can include text, photos, videos, voice messages, and documents. It will also only work for users with a WhatsApp account registered to phone numbers in regions covered by the DMA, according to the FAQ. In September, Meta previewed what third-party …

Nintendo partners with third-party websites to stop Switch 2 scalpers

Nintendo partners with third-party websites to stop Switch 2 scalpers

It is as inevitable as a sunrise that in the hours after the Switch 2 launch next week, third-party sites like eBay will be filled with listings for the new console. But in Japan, Nintendo has announced a new partnership with Japanese third-party retail sites to combat fraudulent Switch 2 listings. Mercari, Yahoo Auctions and Yahoo Flea Market, and Rakuten Rakuma are the participating websites that will, according to a machine translation of Nintendo’s announcement, “proactively remove listings” and establish “a collaborative system for sharing information.” Nintendo says only “fraudulent listings” that violated the sites’ terms of service agreement would be targeted for removal. In a translated statement on Yahoo Japan’s website, the retailer stated that there will be a probationary period for the Switch 2 starting June 5th in which Yahoo Japan will remove listings for the console or suspend the accounts selling them. According to Yahoo Japan, it will revise the probationary period as necessary. Scalpers are the bane of any console launch. Bots flood online buying queues to snap up units before …

India’s fierce attacks forced Pakistan to plead for ceasefire, no third-party involvement: Govt Sources

India’s fierce attacks forced Pakistan to plead for ceasefire, no third-party involvement: Govt Sources

US President Donald Trump claimed credit for the understanding reached between India and Pakistan on halting all military actions, saying the two sides agreed on a “full and immediate ceasefire” after a “long night of talks mediated by the US”. New Delhi: After India successfully destroyed Pakistan’s air bases, Islamabad realised India’s resolve and ‘sued for peace’ by requesting a cessation of hostilities, news agency PTI reported, quoting government sources as saying on Sunday. They also emphasised that no third-party intervention was needed. The sources further said that  US Secretary of State Marco Rubio called External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar to convey that the Pakistanis got the message after being hammered by Indian missiles. India’s fierce attacks forced Islamabad to urge New Delhi to end the hostilities “The Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) of India and Pakistan reached an understanding and no third party was involved,” said the sources.  “India’s precision strikes using an array of weapon systems and missiles on key installations ranging from air defence systems to radar sites and command centres of the …

A new bill would force Apple to allow third-party app stores

A new bill would force Apple to allow third-party app stores

Representative Kat Cammack (R-FL) introduced a bill Tuesday that would require “large app store operators” like Apple to let users install third-party app stores and set them as their default. The bill, called the App Store Freedom Act, aims to “promote competition and protect consumers and developers in the mobile app marketplace,” according to a press release on Tuesday. Though the bill doesn’t mention Apple by name, it carves out rules for “large app store operators,” which it defines as app stores having more than 100 million users in the US. The bill would target Google’s practices as well, as it would force major app stores to let developers use third-party payment systems. It would also require Apple and Google to offer developers “equal access to interfaces, features, and development tools without cost or discrimination,” as well as allow users to remove or hide pre-installed apps. Violations of the bill would result in penalties from the Federal Trade Commission, along with an additional civil penalty of up to $1 million for each violation. “Dominant app …

Google is scrapping its planned changes for third-party cookies in Chrome

Google is scrapping its planned changes for third-party cookies in Chrome

Google’s plan to phase out third-party cookies in Chrome is officially over. In an update on Tuesday, Google Privacy Sandbox VP Anthony Chavez says the company has decided “to maintain our current approach to offering users third-party cookie choice in Chrome.” For years, critics have argued that Google’s Privacy Sandbox could harm advertisers and violate privacy laws, while the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) told users to opt out of the program, saying it “is still tracking your internet use for Google’s behavioral advertising.” Last week, a US judge found that Google “willfully engaged in a series of anticompetitive acts” in the advertising technology industry, and the competition regulator in the UK, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), has been investigating its evolving series of proposals to address concerns that they might give Google an unfair advantage. “As we’ve engaged with the ecosystem, including publishers, developers, regulators, and the ads industry, it remains clear that there are divergent perspectives on making changes that could impact the availability of third-party cookies,” Chavez writes, adding that Google “will …

Synology is tightening restrictions on third-party NAS hard drives

Synology is tightening restrictions on third-party NAS hard drives

Synology is preparing to roll out new restrictions on third-party hard drives in its future network attached storage (NAS) devices later this year, the company confirmed to Ars Technica. The changes could make it much harder to use third-party drives in Synology’s devices for typical use cases, like backing up household computers or as local media servers. The good news is that if you already own a Synology NAS, the company says the change won’t affect you. Synology says in an EU press release that “starting with Plus Series models released in 2025,” only Synology-branded drives and those the company has certified to meet its specifications will “offer the full range of features and support.” According to Ars, Synology plans to update its compatibility lists to reflect which third-party drives that it has certified. The new restrictions mean that without Synology-approved drives, you might not be able to do things like pool storage between disks or take advantage of drive lifespan analysis offered by the company’s software. The change doesn’t apply to Synology J- and- …

Google Play Store Reportedly Lets Users Pause Play Protect When Sideloading Third-Party Apps

Google Play Store Reportedly Lets Users Pause Play Protect When Sideloading Third-Party Apps

Google is rolling out a new feature for the Play Store which makes it easier to sideload apps on Android devices, as per a new report. It lets users disable Play Protect, its cloud-based app-verification service, temporarily for a day instead of turning it off permanently, making sure that the devices don’t stay unprotected. The feature will reportedly stop the programme from scanning apps installed outside the Play Store for malware. Google Play Protect’s New Pause Feature The feature was first spotted by Android Authority in the Google Play Store version 42.2.19-31. Disabling the Scan apps with Play Protect option under Play Protect settings will now present users with a choice of pausing it instead. As per Google, selecting this option will ensure Play Protect no longer scans apps available outside of Google Play for malware. However, this is said to be temporary and the cloud-based verification service will automatically turn back on the next day. The company advises Android users to assert vigilance when catering to requests received from apps to turn off Play …
