Thiruvananthapuram, Agriculture Minister T Siddique on Monday said excessive pesticide residues and toxic substances were found in 58 of the 1,262 food samples tested at official laboratories in Kerala and steps would be taken to promote organic vegetable farming. Indian Railways has announced 112 special train trips for the upcoming Onam festival season to accommodate the expected rise in passenger demand, significantly increasing the number of festive services compared to last year. The special trains will operate between August 14 and September 6, connecting Kerala with several major cities across the country and providing additional travel options for passengers returning home for the celebrations. According to an official statement, Southern Railway will operate 54 of the 112 special services, while the remaining 58 trips will be run by other railway zones.  The additional trains have been introduced to reduce waiting lists, ease congestion on popular routes and ensure smoother travel during one of Kerala’s busiest travel seasons. Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala Chief Minister V D Satheesan on Saturday said the government is fully prepared to tackle rain-related emergencies as heavy rain continued to batter the state, triggering landslides, flash floods and widespread disruption in several districts. Satheesan said teams of the National Disaster Response Force , police and other emergency agencies were fully prepared to handle any eventuality. A PNG gas pipeline was damaged during road construction work at Kumarapuram here on Tuesday afternoon, causing a leak. An officer from Chackai fire station said that information of the gas leak was received around 12.50 pm and a team was immediately dispatched to the area. He further said that the valve of the Piped Natural Gas (PNG) pipeline was closed immediately and the personnel of the fire and rescue service are overseeing the repair work. “Once the remaining gas from the pipe is expelled, the repair work will be carried out,” the officer said. Local residents alleged that the pipeline should have been laid much deeper, and a major tragedy was averted due to God”s grace. KSRTC bus crashes into lottery shop in Thiruvananthapuram; three injured

Three persons, including a lottery shop employee, were injured after a KSRTC electric bus lost control and rammed into a lottery shop near the Pappanamcode KSRTC depot in Thiruvananthapuram on Tuesday (June 16, 2026). The accident occurred around 6.30 a.m., shortly after the bus left the depot for regular service. The vehicle reportedly went out of control and veered across the road before crashing into the shop located opposite the depot. According to the police, the bus first struck a scooter before ploughing into the lottery outlet. The impact left the front portion of the bus severely damaged. The driver sustained serious injuries and had to be rescued by fire service personnel after cutting open parts of the bus cabin to extricate him. A woman conductor on board also suffered injuries, though her condition is not believed to be serious. The lottery shop employee was also seriously injured in the collision.
