Kerala: PNG gas leak in Thiruvananthapuram after road work damages pipeline

A PNG gas pipeline was damaged during road construction work at Kumarapuram here on Tuesday afternoon, causing a leak. An officer from Chackai fire station said that information of the gas leak was received around 12.50 pm and a team was immediately dispatched to the area. He further said that the valve of the Piped Natural Gas (PNG) pipeline was closed immediately and the personnel of the fire and rescue service are overseeing the repair work. “Once the remaining gas from the pipe is expelled, the repair work will be carried out,” the officer said. Local residents alleged that the pipeline should have been laid much deeper, and a major tragedy was averted due to God”s grace. BJP MLA V Muraleedharan, who reached the spot, said there was no need to be concerned as it was natural gas and would not catch fire easily. “There might be temporary difficulty for people in the area who may have inhaled it,” he said. KSRTC bus crashes into lottery shop in Thiruvananthapuram; three injured

Three persons, including a lottery shop employee, were injured after a KSRTC electric bus lost control and rammed into a lottery shop near the Pappanamcode KSRTC depot in Thiruvananthapuram on Tuesday (June 16, 2026). The accident occurred around 6.30 a.m., shortly after the bus left the depot for regular service. The vehicle reportedly went out of control and veered across the road before crashing into the shop located opposite the depot. According to the police, the bus first struck a scooter before ploughing into the lottery outlet. The impact left the front portion of the bus severely damaged. The driver sustained serious injuries and had to be rescued by fire service personnel after cutting open parts of the bus cabin to extricate him. A woman conductor on board also suffered injuries, though her condition is not believed to be serious. The lottery shop employee was also seriously injured in the collision. R. Sugathan, the BJP councillor representing Vazhottukonam ward in Thiruvananthapuram Corporation, is facing as many as 19 criminal cases, including several serious charges such as attempted murder. According to details released by the Home department, 18 cases have been registered against him at the Vattiyurkavu police station and one case at Nedumangad police station. In all 19 cases, Sugathan has been named as the first accused. Among the charges are four cases of attempted murder, along with offences including rioting, causing hurt and criminal intimidation. The police have already filed charge sheets in 18 of the cases, official sources said. Prior to the latest instance in which provisions of the Kerala Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act (KAAPA) was invoked against Mr. Sugathan, the district authorities had previously issued externment orders against him in 2023 and 2025. The Vattiyurkavu police had recently arrested the councillor in a late-night dramatic operation after evading law for over a month following a temple clash.
