Jude Bellingham had just scored both of England’s goals in a bad-tempered 2-1 extra-time win over Norway. A German coach in charge of the English national team. The chances of an English fan hearing these words would almost seem impossible even 2-3 years ago. But late on Tuesday, The Sunday Times reported that Thomas Tuchel would become England’s first-ever German manager. Since Italian Fabio Capello left the job in 2012, the England Football Association seemed adamant to give the job to any Englishman available. That’s when we saw the job being passed around from one Englishman to another with Stuart Pearce, Roy Hodgson and Sam Allardyce each having a go at it. After those frankly tumultuous years, Gareth Southgate would take the reins and help England reach the 2018 World Cup semifinals, the Euro 2020 final, the 2022 World Cup quarterfinal and the 2024 Euro final. But the silverware was missing which coupled with his orthodox playing style, led to a barrage of vitriol against him which ultimately forced him to resign.
