“The Union government has implemented the National Education Policy (NEP-2020) undemocratically, without consulting state governments. It is moving towards the complete centralisation of education,” said Prof. Sukhadeo Thorat, educationist and Chairman of the Commission for State Education Policy (SEP). Inaugurating a seminar ‘Towards People’s Policy on Education 2026’ — an alternative to NEP 2020, organised by the All India Save Education Committee (AISEC) in the city on Saturday, he said that in the name of the Indian Knowledge System, irrational and unscientific curricula were being designed.  Privatisation impact “Since the wave of privatisation in the 1990s, educational inequality has been rising. Approximately 67% of higher educational institutions have become self-financing and private. Due to escalating fees, a 22% dropout rate is observed among economically disadvantaged sections. Consequently, universal education has become a mirage,” he said, and called for the adoption of a ‘People’s Education Policy’ that is scientific, secular, democratic, and universal, treating education as a public good rather than as a commodity. Among the big losers included former Maharashtra chief minister Prithviraj Chavan who was contesting for a third time from Karad South seat. He was defeated by Atul Bhosale of the BJP. While Bhosale secured 1,39, 505 votes, Chavan managed 1,00,150 votes. Chavan lost by 39, 355 votes. While Chavan was unavailable for comment, Congress leaders like MLC Satej Patil and MLA Vishwajeet Kadam said money-power employed by Mahayuti and BJP led to the former chief minister’s defeat. The Congress had always dominated the Karad South seat. In 1951 and 1957, Yashwantrao Mohite was elected from the Peasants and Workers’ Party (PWP). After that, Mohite joined the Congress. He won on Congress tickets from 1962 to 1978. From 1980 to 2009, that is for seven consecutive times, Vilasrao Patil Undalkar won from the seat. In 2014 and 2019, Chavan won the seat. Jayashree Thorat is a doctor by profession (File) Mumbai: BJP leader Vasantrao Deshmukh has courted controversy after he allegedly made a derogatory remark against Congress leader Balasaheb Thorat’s daughter. Vasantrao Deshmukh, a long-time opponent of the Thorats, made the alleged remark at a programme organised by BJP leader Sujay Vikhe Patil at Sangamner in Ahilyanagar district on Friday. The saffron party, however, has condemned the remark, with the Maharashtra BJP chief calling for action against Vasantrao Deshmukh. Tensions erupted in the Sangamner as Congress workers and Balasaheb Thorat supporters protested by tearing down banners of Vikhe Patil. Jayashree Thorat, a doctor by profession, has been campaigning for her father, who is seeking re-election from the Sangamner constituency for the ninth time. Maharashtra Assembly Election 2024: The Congress party today (October 24) announced the names of 48 candidates for the upcoming Assembly polls. Congress released its first list of candidates and fielded state unit chief Nana Patole from the Sakoli seat.
