The hatchlings were recovered from the premises of a house on Seetharam Lane. The incident first came to light when house owner Karthik’s brother spotted two snake hatchlings near the canal adjoining the house. More hatchlings were found across the compound later in the day. Around eight were caught on the first day, with two slipping into the water. A fresh search on Thursday morning led to the capture of 10 more hatchlings, including some found inside a scooter parked in front of the house. The hatchlings, each around 50 cm long, were handed over to forest officials. As per the preliminary assessment by the Forest department a python may have entered from the nearby canal, laid eggs in or around the house foundation, and the hatchlings might have emerged recently. The accused, identified as Paulose Kachappally of Mekkatt, had allegedly been involved in a series of burglaries targeting temples, churches and other religious institutions over the years. The police said further investigation was underway to trace stolen items and identify additional cases linked to the accused. Heavy rains continued to lash several parts of Kerala, waterlogging roads and flooding low-lying areas, with the IMD on Friday issuing an orange alert in seven districts of the state. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert in Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur and Kasaragod districts of the state. The weather agency also said that thunderstorms with moderate to heavy rainfall and strong winds reaching 40 kilometers per hour were likely in various parts of these districts. The tiger was found abandoned by her mother deep inside the forest near the Mangaladevi temple in the Periyar Tiger Reserve (PTR) on November 23, 2020. According to an order issued by Chief Wildlife Warden Pramod G. Krishnan, the then two-month-old cub was found in a severely weakened state, suffering from splayed hind legs and corneal opacity in both eyes. The cub was initially moved to an anti-poaching camp at Karadikkavala for treatment, following the standard operating procedure (SOP) issued by the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA). In July 2021, the Forest department established an Animal Hospice and Palliative Care Unit (AHPCU) spanning 2.78 hectares at Onnampalam, near Thekkady, specifically to rehabilitate and rewild the tiger within the PTR.
