He climbed to ninth in the world last season, and leads the distance chart this season; he holds the fourth best hurl by an Asian, a mark of 89.37 achieved at the Champions Track and Field meet in Sri Lanka. The twist of fate came when legendary throws coach Tony Prasanna stumbled onto him. He coaxed him into flinging the javelin and took him under his wings. “It was coach Tony who introduced me to javelin,” he tells The Indian Express. The coach’s advice was simple: “He always tells me that if I master the basics and do them the right way, I will …

“So Stupid”: On India Star Javelin Thrower Failing Dope Test, Former Coach Says This

He may not have coached him as closely as Neeraj Chopra but Shivpal Singh’s second doping offence has infuriated celebrated German bio-mechanics expert Klaus Bartonietz, who cannot make sense of the Olympian’s “stupid” conduct while claiming to be a proud representative of India. Bartonietz lambasted Shivpal for “cheating” despite coming from a proud sporting family. The German bio-mechanics expert, who guided Chopra to a historic gold at the Tokyo Olympics and a silver at the Paris Games, didn’t hide his anger as he lambasted Shivpal for a second doping offence that could lead to an eight-year ban. “Disappointed? I don’t know. But I’m really pissed off. So stupid,” Bartonietz told PTI in an interview on Wednesday. “It shows that you don’t trust in this process. All those who are doping don’t trust that they can reach the top by normal nature of training,” he added. The 29-year-old Shivpal, who also competed at the Tokyo Olympics, tested positive for a banned substance in an out-of-competition test earlier this year. “It makes me so angry …

From motherhood, PhD to gold – Discus thrower Seema breaks barriers

Seema Kaliramna’s gold medal win in the discus throw at the 2025 National Games in Dehradun is a demonstration of sheer passion and determination to succeed, overcoming the odds life has posed. While most athletes channel all their focus into excelling in their sport, Seema faces a unique challenge. Balancing the rigours of motherhood and the pursuit of a PhD, her journey on the athletic track has taken a demanding turn. On July 1, 2022, the 24-year-old from Haryana returned to the throwing circle exactly 11 months after giving birth to her son, Rudra. However, her initial attempts were shaky, leaving her in a spot of bother and pushing her into self-doubt. Struggling to find the rhythm, her movements felt rusty as she fought to regain her form. Though it was well short of her personal best – 57.19m, achieved at the Inter-State Championships last year – the victory served as a major morale …
