Spain beat India men’s team 3-1 in their 2024-25 FIH Hockey Pro League at the Kalinga Hockey Stadium in Bhubaneswar on Saturday. While Sukhjeet Singh (24′) was the lone scorer for India, Borja Lacalle (28′), Ignacio Cobos (38′) and Bruno Avila (56′) scored for the Spanish side to begin their India leg on a high. It was India who were eager to get off the blocks with aggressive attack in the first quarter as they employed high press to restrict the Spanish players from making any headway early in the game. There were plenty of opportunities India created in the opening quarter with a penalty corner coming their way as early as the third minute of the game. But Jugraj Singh’s drag flick didn’t make the post and was cleared by Spain’s first rusher. In the 14th minute, India came close to 1-0 lead when a fine pass by Abhishek was picked up brilliantly by Lalit Upadhyay who made a brilliant run in. But when he looked up to see if he can make an …

Shillong Lajong thumps hapless Sreenidi Deccan

Shillong Lajong FC put four unanswered goals past Sreenidi Deccan FC to take three points in their 2024-25 I-League match at the SSA Stadium on Friday. Lajong had come into the game as the most prolific scorers in the league and their performance burgeoned those credentials. Sreenidi’s mini revival, where they had lost once in the last seven matches, came to an end though and they will reflect on the fact that they have now conceded nine goals in two encounters against the Meghalaya side this season. Despite facing a highly partisan crowd, Sreenidi Deccan were the ones who dominated the first half, controlling the possession in midfield even without actually making inroads with the ball in the final third. The hosts for their part were playing mostly on the counter, often using set pieces to trouble Sreenidi’s defence. The first chance fell to Sreenidi in the 5th minute when William Alves cut the ball back towards the penalty spot from the left. A deflection took it to the feet of Lalromawia, whose first time …
