The IMD predicted that the maximum temperature could rise to around 35 degrees Celsius, still low for the time of the season. The Orange Alert, a part of the IMD’s weather warning system, means that residents should be alert and ready for potentially disruptive weather. At 8.30 am, humidity levels were high at 80 per cent, adding to the damp conditions. Delhi’s air quality remained in the “satisfactory” category, with an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 95 recorded in the morning. After sudden gusty winds and an overnight dust surge Wednesday, much of Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) woke up to a thick haze, with visibility plunging at many locations in the Capital, said the India Meteorological Department (IMD) Thursday. Due to an incoming cloud mass reported Wednesday night, sudden gusty winds of 30 to 40 kilometres per hour over the Palam area swept fine dust particles into the lower atmosphere. A senior IMD official said that visibility fell from 4,500 m to 1,200 metre in under two hours from 10 pm to 11.30 pm. Although winds later calmed to 3 to 7 kmph, the suspended haze lingered through the night, affecting the air quality. According to the official, visibility continued to remain poor at 1200-1500 m at both Safdarjung and Palam airports with dust in the air.
