Goa files affidavit against CEC report on tiger reserve| India News

The Goa government has opposed the report of the Supreme Court-appointed Central Empowered Committee (CEC) recommending the notification of a tiger reserve in the state, calling it “vague and without legal or factual basis.” The CEC, which looked into the issue on the top court’s direction, recommended that a tiger reserve be notified in Goa in two stages (PTI FILE) In an affidavit filed in the Supreme Court, Goa’s additional principal chief conservator of forests, K. Ramesh Kumar, said the committee, which submitted its report to the top court in November last year, failed to “apply its mind” to the ground reality. The top court had earlier asked the committee to examine the issue. Goa approached the Supreme Court to challenge a July 2023 high court order mandating the creation of a 745-sq km reserve in the Mhadei region — a move the state has resisted for years. The CEC, which looked into the issue on the top court’s direction, recommended that a tiger reserve be notified in Goa in two stages: the areas contiguous …

SC-appointed panel asks Goa to notify tiger reserve in two phases

A Supreme Court (SC)-appointed panel has recommended that a tiger reserve be notified in Goa in two stages, citing the need for community consultations, awareness building, and confidence generation, even as the state government opposed the idea. It proposed that the areas contiguous with Karnataka’s Kali Tiger Reserve be first notified as the core area. The state government insisted that Goa has no resident tigers. (HT PHOTO/Representative) The Supreme Court formed the Central Empowered Committee (CEC) after Goa challenged a July 2023 high court order to notify a tiger reserve covering the Mhadei Wildlife Sanctuary and surrounding areas (around 750 square kilometers) in the Western Ghats. It was tasked with examining the issue and filing a report after hearing all the parties. The committee circulated a copy of its report among petitioners ahead of a hearing in the Supreme Court next month. The Goa government submitted to the CEC that the area proposed for the reserve has a huge population of around 1,00,000 inhabitants. It argued that they have been living there for over 50 …

Wildlife Board defers nod to Arunachal highway near Myanmar border, Tadoba mining over tiger corridor concerns | India News

The National Board for Wildlife (NBWL) standing committee, in a meeting chaired by Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav last month, deferred nod for the construction of the Arunachal Frontier Highway proposed through the core zone of the Namdapha Tiger reserve and that for the Durgapur opencast mine falling in tiger migration paths near Maharashtra’s Tadoba, as per minutes of the meeting. The standing committee also discussed the need to have standard guidelines for deciding projects and the need to prioritise wildlife other than tigers and such flagship species. There was also a review of the follow-up steps taken on initiatives announced on March 3 during the full-body NBWL meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The panel also discussed that the environment ministry’s wildlife division and the Wildlife Institute of India, Dehradun, will work on a scheme for sloth bear and Gharial conservation. It was also noted during the review that the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) and the International Big Cat Alliance would work for organising a global summit at the end of 2025. …

Why has India got another tiger reserve?

Why has India got another tiger reserve?

On March 9, Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav announced that the Centre had declared the Madhav National Park in Madhya Pradesh as the country’s 58th tiger reserve. This is the ninth tiger reserve in the State, the highest among the States. Maharashtra has six; Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka have five each. What is the rationale behind setting up tiger reserves? While tigers were historically abundant in India, hunting, poaching and the colonial exploitation of forests for timber started a precipitous decline in their numbers in the early 20th century. It was estimated in 1964 that there would have been around 40,000 tigers in the country at the turn of the 20th century. By the 1960s, these numbers were down to between 2,000 and 4,000, attributed to wanton hunting aided by a proliferation of gun licences issued in the years following 1947, improved access to the forest, clearing of large tracts of forests for various purposes, mushrooming of the new businesses of “Shikar Companies” and fur trade. Following an alarm raised by naturalists, the Indian Board …
