Four women who went to the forest early Friday morning to collect tendu leaves were killed by a tigress in Maharashtra’s Chandrapur district, taking the toll of human-wildlife conflicts in the district to 18 since January, forest officials said. A tigress has given birth to three cubs in the Sariska Tiger Reserve in Rajasthan, taking the total number of the big cats in the protected area to 53, officials said on Thursday. In what can be termed good news for wildlife lovers, a third tigress, STR-06, was released into the wild at the Sahyadri Tiger Reserve in western Maharashtra on Saturday. The tigress was captured on Thursday around 5 pm from the Nagalwadi forest range of Pench Tiger Reserve in central India, following which she was transported to the Sahyadri Tiger Reserve. After the road journey, the wild cat was taken by boat into the Koyna Wildlife Sanctuary, which forms part of the Sahyadri Tiger Reserve, on Friday night. Upon arrival, veterinary officers conducted a medical examination, after which the tigress was offered water and meat, both of which she consumed. On Saturday at 6 am, the tigress was released at a safe location in the core forest area of the Koyna Wildlife Sanctuary. After days of cautious movement around her enclosure, adult female tigress STR-05 (TARA) on Thursday finally entered the core forest of the Sahyadri Tiger Reserve, completing a scientifically monitored soft release by the Maharashtra Forest Department. Forest officials said the gates of the soft-release enclosure were opened on December 13 at 7 am, but the tigress initially chose to stay in and around the area. During this period, she displayed natural wild behaviour, made a successful kill, and fed on it for nearly three days. On the morning of December 18, at around 7 am, TARA emerged from the enclosure and moved into the Chandoli core forest. Earlier identified as T7 (S2) during the management phase, the tigress was housed in a specially developed enclosure where her health, behaviour, and adaptability were closely monitored by forest officials and wildlife experts.
