Joseph Vijay, on Sunday (March 29, 2026), announced his party’s candidates for the ensuing Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu. Mr. Vijay is set to make his electoral debut from two constituencies – Perambur in Chennai and Tiruchi East. The DMK has fielded incumbent MLA R.D. Shekar from Perambur, while in the AIADMK front, the constituency has been allocated to the PMK led by Anbumani. SASTRA team wins National Tamil Trial Advocacy competition

SASTRA Deemed University students S. Santhameena, R. Sanchay, and S. Aboorva won the fourth annual edition of the National Tamil Trial Advocacy competition hosted by Tamil Nadu National Law University in Tiruchi this week while Theni Government Law College team members M. Bhavadharani, M. Mohamed Asmath, and N. Subha secured the second place. K. Praveen of Government Law College, Dharmapuri, and D. Vigneshwaran of School of Excellence in Law, Chennai, won the Best Advocate prizes. According to an official press release on Monday, the competition was held under the auspices of TNNLU’s Trial Advocacy Committee and is aimed at strengthening the practical dimensions of legal education. The competition, which witnessed the participation of 22 teams from various law colleges, was inaugurated on Saturday by advocates Nagapriya and Karthik Kanna. Two preliminary rounds were conducted to ensure a comprehensive evaluation of all participating teams. Special emphasis was on the participants’ knowledge and practical application of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The top eight teams were selected for the quarter-finals. Recovered gold jewellery from Ariyamangalam dump. | Photo Credit: Special Arrangement Tiruchi Corporation’s sanitation workers have earned praise for their diligence after they recovered and returned three sovereigns of gold jewellery mistakenly discarded in a garbage bag in Ambikapuram, Kalkandar Kottai Road, under Ward 36 of Tiruchi Corporation. N.S. Suresh Kasi Raj, 56, a senior electrical engineer at Ponmalai Railway Workshop, routinely removes his gold chain and rings before sleeping. On March 6, he had placed them near banana peels. The next morning, his family unknowingly discarded the jewellery with the waste, which was collected by sanitation workers. Mr. Suresh, who realised this later, rushed to the waste segregation centre, where workers informed him that the waste had been transported to the Ariyamangalam dump. Mr. Suresh reached the dump yard and sought help from van driver P. Arunagiri who regularly picks up waste from his area and sanitation workers A. Pandi Selvi and R. Seetha who were in the dump. District Central Library in Tiruchi to hold TNPSC Group II-A, IV model tests

The District Central Library will be conducting model tests on Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission (TNPSC) Group II-A Mains and Group IV competitive exams on its West Boulevard Road premises on January 20 from 10 a.m. to 1.30 p.m. According to a release, the free tests will be held in association with N.R. I.A.S Academy and Rotary Phoenix Club. Portions covered for the Group IV model test will be Unit III Indian History and Culture and Indian National Movement, Unit III Writing skills, October 2024 Current Affairs and problems Simple Interest in Mathematics. A view of the new Air Traffic Control Tower-cum-Technical Block at the Tiruchi international airport. | Photo Credit: Special Arrangement The new Air Traffic Control Tower-cum-Technical Block under construction at the Tiruchi international airport. | Photo Credit: Special Arrangement The new multi-storeyed Air Traffic Control Tower-cum-Technical Block coming up at the Tiruchi International Airport is expected to be commissioned before this year end.  The project is part of the upgrade of the non-metro Tiruchi airport which has more overseas flight services than domestic services.  The construction of the Air Traffic Tower control-cum-Technical Block commenced in July 2023 with civil work under way at the project site. The construction of the multi-storeyed buildings to house the tower and the technical block separately are proceeding briskly with over 60% of civil work having been completed. The plan is to complete the civil work in three to four months, said airport authorities. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) is implementing the project at a cost of ₹60.75 crore which includes electrical works in the upcoming new structures. The new …

MDMK leader Vaiko accompanied the MP when called on the Railway Minister in New Delhi recently and submitted memorandums. One of the demands was to provide a stop at Tiruverumbur railway station for the Cholan Superfast Express, Rameswaram Express, Tiruchendur Superfast Express and Ernakulam-Karaikal Express. Govt. hospital doctors in Tiruchi remove anklet screw from toddler’s lung

Doctors at the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital (MGMGH) in Tiruchi saved the life of a three-year-old boy by removing the screw of an anklet that he had accidentally swallowed. According to an official statement, the toddler from a village in Perambalur district had swallowed the screw while playing on December 13 and was immediately taken to a hospital in Iluppur. When X-ray images revealed that the screw was lodged in the patient’s bronchus (large airway that leads from the windpipe to a lung), he was referred to the Emergency Room of MGMGH. Under the guidance of S. Kumaravel, Dean, KAP Viswanatham Government Medical College, attached to MGMGH, a team of doctors, led by Radhakrishnan, head, Department of Ear Nose Throat (ENT) Surgery, removed the foreign object with the help of a rigid bronchoscope. The inscriptions dated back to the Chola period. B. Charumathi, Assistant Epigraphist, ASI, who copied the two inscriptions on maplitho papers from the walls of the temple in September said the two inscriptions written in Tamil were deciphered by the experts recently and found to be dating back to 13th century. One inscription has information about giving orders to Thirugnanasammandha Pandidhar for a specific period to carry out thirupani in the temple. It dates back to the period of Chola King Rajaraja – III. Another inscription records an order of the Nattars Valluvappadi (Nattolai) to Devarkanmi and accountant of the Azhagiya Someswaramudiya Nayanar Temple at Periyanavalur covenying the grant of dry and wet lands, which was leased at an amount of 30,000 kasu of per …

Thirteen out of the 51 rainfed tanks in the sub-division have filled up so far. These include the Jamberi, Alathudayanpatti Periya Eri, Alathudayanpatti Chinna Eri, and Sirunavalur Eri, sources in the Water Resources Department told The Hindu. Jamberi is one of the biggest irrigation tanks in the district and is situated in a fertile belt in Uppilliyapuram area where the famous seeraga samba rice is grown. The tank in Vairichettipalayam village has an ayacut area of about 1,020 acres and has a capacity to hold 72.34 million cubic feet (mcft) of water. The tank mainly gets runoff rainwater flow from the Kolli Hills. The Alathudayapatti Periya Eri, with a storage capacity of 47.43 mcft, irrigates over 325 acres.
