Tiruppur woman dies after botched YouTube-assisted childbirth at home

Sasikala | Photo Credit: Special Arrangement A 32-year-old woman from a village in Tiruppur district died on Sunday (June 28, 2026) of post-partum haemorrhage and related complications after she gave birth to a baby at her home, allegedly assisted by her husband watching YouTube videos on birthing, on June 24. The police said that following complications, K. Sasikala, of Punjaithalavaipalayam in  Uthukuli taluk, was taken to a private hospital in Coimbatore, where she died on Sunday morning. The woman went into labour in the early hours of June 24. Her husband Kolanthasamy, 35, and mother-in-law assisted in the delivery, allegedly watching videos of natural childbirth on YouTube. She gave birth to a female child, the police said. The woman developed post-partum haemorrhage as the placenta was not expelled after the childbirth. She was taken to the Government Erode Medical College and Hospital at  Perundurai. Thereafter, she was admitted to a private hospital in Coimbatore on June 25 and died without responding to treatment on Sunday, the police said. Tamil Nadu recorded over 56 per cent voting on Thursday as polling for elections to 234 Assembly constituencies was on across the state. According to Election Commission of India (EC) figures, voter turnout stood at 56.81 per cent at 1 pm. Tiruppur district topped with a 62.97 per cent voter turnout. Chennai recorded 54.58 per cent polling, while Madurai (54.75), Coimbatore (58.24) and the centrally located Tiruchirappalli district (57.66) also saw brisk polling. Kolathur Assembly constituency in Chennai, where DMK President and Chief Minister M K Stalin is contesting, saw 56.59 polling till 1 pm. At Chepauk-Tiruvallikeni it was 53.55 per cent. At least 40 people fell ill, with four in critical condition, after allegedly consuming adulterated toddy laced with sedative pills in the Gundadam area of Tiruppur district, police said on Sunday. According to preliminary investigations, the toddy was allegedly spiked with a cocktail of sedative tablets, often used in psychiatric treatments, to increase its intoxicating effect. “Four individuals who were found unconscious were rushed to the Dharapuram Government Hospital and later shifted to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH) for specialised treatment. Surya, 24, of Kovilpatti in Thoothukudi. The inmate, official sources said, was found missing at the time of evening roll call on Saturday (December 21, 2024). Subsequently, the prison authorities lodged a complaint with the Tiruppur North police. Initial investigations indicated that Surya, who was arrested and remanded in a case of chain-snatching in Nallur limits last month, had escaped in the duration of a power outage, when the CCTV cameras got switched off. Representational image only. | Photo Credit: PTI The police have arrested an employee of a textile mill at Karanampettai in Tiruppur district, Tamil Nadu, on the charge of murdering a six-year-old boy, son of his co-worker, who is also from Odisha. Kanhu Das (34) who is from Ranital in Odisha was arrested on November 14 for murdering Ganesh, son of Anita Naik from Suramani village in Ganjam district in Odisha. Ms. Naik found her son missing when she returned to the labourers’ quarters at Sangothipalayam after work around 7.30 p.m. on November 8. She used to leave him under the care of a woman at the quarters. The woman lodged a complaint with the Palladam police around 11.30 p.m. and the boy was found murdered outside the compound wall of the quarters the next day. Das, who was working as a supervisor of the mill, became one of the suspects during the investigation as he had a break-up with the boy’s mother Ms. Naik, who also worked at the same mill. The unrest in Bangladesh and reports of illegal immigration of people from the neighbouring country into India have made the police and industries in Coimbatore and Tiruppur districts to step up vigil. The police have received intelligence alerts on potential influx of Bangladesh nationals into industry hubs like Coimbatore and Tiruppur, where they could seek jobs as migrant workers from east/north-east States. Coimbatore City Police Commissioner V. Balakrishnan said the police had been keeping a routine watch on the migrant workforce in the city to curb illegal stay of Bangladesh nationals and other foreigners. “In Coimbatore city, a large number of migrant workforce from the north-east States, especially those from West Bengal and Assam, are employed in the jewellery manufacturing sector.
