Interview l TM Krishna: Sree Narayana Guru’s poetry is directly talking to the struggles of today

When Carnatic musician TM Krishna sat in his studio in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, more than half a decade ago to set a particular text to music, it sparked a new turn for classical music and reimagining India’s rich history in the pursuit of a society without social, economic and caste discrimination. T M Krishna returns to Music Academy stage, capping a year of upheaval for Carnatic landscape | Chennai News

On Christmas morning in Chennai, T M Krishna, one of Carnatic music’s most celebrated vocalists, returned to the Music Academy after nearly a decade. Opening and closing his performance to a standing ovation, Krishna reclaimed the stage, which he once left in protest, with a concert to mark his acceptance of the Sangita Kalanidhi award, the highest honour in the Carnatic music world. The concert caps a year of controversy that has rocked the Academy and the Carnatic music landscape. Earlier this month, the Madras High Court cleared the way for Krishna to receive the Sangita Kalanidhi M S Subbulakshmi Award after a legal battle that gripped Chennai’s cultural and legal circles. The lawsuit, filed by Subbulakshmi’s grandson, V Shrinivasan, argued that the award violated her will, which purportedly prohibited memorials in her name. The court dismissed this claim, ruling that the award did not constitute a memorial as defined by the will. Shrinivasan’s objections, however, went beyond legalities. He accused Krishna, an outspoken critic of caste in Carnatic music, of making disparaging remarks about …

Openly proposed a genocide of ‘brahmins’2. Repeatedly called/abused every woman of this community with vile profanity 3. Relentlessly worked to normalize filthy language in social discourse,” their statement read. Hindustan Times – your fastest source …
