Calcutta HC grants interim relief to Abhishek Banerjee in signature forgery case

The Calcutta High Court on Thursday granted TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee interim protection from any coercive action in a signature forgery case over the party`s choice of Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal assembly. Justice Kausik Chanda, while granting interim protection for three weeks, directed Banerjee to appear before the CID at its headquarters, Bhabani Bhaban, here by 6 pm on Thursday for questioning in the case. Banerjee`s lawyer stated that the MP is scheduled to arrive in Kolkata from Delhi around 4 pm. The matter will come up for hearing again after two weeks. Cash-for-query case: Relief for Mahua Moitra, Delhi HC sets aside Lokpal order on chargesheet | Legal News

The Delhi High Court on Friday set aside an order of the Lokpal that had granted sanction to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to file a chargesheet against TMC Lok Sabha MP Mahua Moitra in relation to the cash-for-query row. Moitra, in a plea before the Delhi HC, had challenged the Lokpal’s November 12 order, primarily on the ground that it was passed without taking into consideration her submissions and filings before the anti-corruption ombudsman in violation of the prescribed procedure under Section 20 (7) of the Lokpal Act. A division bench of Justices Anil Kshetarpal and Harish Vaidyanathan Shankar, pronouncing the verdict in open court, also remanded the matter back to Lokpal to reconsider the aspect of grant of sanction as per the provisions of the Act, and take a decision in a month’s time. Trinamool Congress MP Derek O’Brien targeted the Election Commission over the arrest of the party’s national spokesperson Saket Gokhale by Gujarat Police in a fresh case hours after he secured bail in a case related to his tweet about the Morbi bridge collapse tragedy. Gokhale was granted bail after he was produced before the court in Ahmedabad on Thursday following the completion of his police custody but was soon arrested in another case registered by Morbi police. Saket Gokhale had tweeted a news clipping about information purportedly obtained through the Right to Information (RTI) claiming that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Morbi after the bridge collapse cost ₹30 crore. “RTI reveals that Modi’s visit to Morbi for a few hours cost ₹30 cr.
