She was given a clean chit in one of those instances. The inspector, Sandhyarani Jena, was recently posted at the Talchua Marine police station in coastal Kendrapada district, and was suspended on Wednesday for “gross misconduct and dereliction of duty” after a 55-year-old woman and her 31-year-old son lodged a custodial torture complaint. The mother and son were summoned to the police station by Jena over a domestic dispute case. A departmental probe has also been ordered against Jena’s conduct based on which further action will be initiated against her, officials said. Jena did not respond to calls and messages seeking a comment. According to the complainants, the officer assaulted the 55-year-old and disrobed her. The story so far: Nearly six years after the Sattankulam custodial torture deaths of trader P. Jayaraj and his son J. Benicks, the First Additional District and Sessions Court in Madurai will deliver the verdict in the case on March 23, 2026 (Monday). The horrific crime took place in June 2020 in Sattankulam, Thoothukudi district, Tamil Nadu, during the countrywide COVID-19 pandemic lockdown. Former Director General of Police (DGP) Shabbir Khandwawala, 76, who was Gujarat’s first Muslim police chief, was Tuesday acquitted in a case of custodial torture going back 50 years by the Gujarat High Court on the grounds that the  prosecution had “failed to establish beyond reasonable doubt” the bodily injury to the complainant was inflicted in police custody. In a 164-page judgment delivered Tuesday, Justice Gita Gopi of the Gujarat HC set aside the 2003 judgment that had convicted the 1973-batch IPS officer to five years of rigorous imprisonment handed out by the Additional Sessions Judge of the Fifth Fast Track Court in Junagadh, holding that it was “erroneous and fails in merit”. The State government’s appeal seeking enhancement of the sentence was also dismissed. The trial was carried out on a complaint by one Merag Haja who alleged he was tortured in custody to “extract a confession” that led to him being permanently maimed. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has ruled out what the Madras High Court had termed as “the conversion angle” in the suicide case of a 17-year-old girl in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu. It thus denied the primary suspicion raised by the High Court when it transferred the investigation from the state police to the central agency in 2022. In a compliance affidavit filed before the Supreme Court containing its chargesheet, the CBI has concluded that the minor, a student of Sacred Heart Higher Secondary School in Michaelpatti, took her own life due to “mental torture” from the hostel warden regarding administrative work and housekeeping chores, rather than due to any pressure to convert to Christianity. The agency has filed the chargesheet against the warden, Sister Sagaya Mary, under Section 305 of the Indian Penal Code, which punishes the abetment of suicide of a child, and Section 75 of the Juvenile Justice Act (Care and Protection of Children) Act, which criminalises cruelty towards a child.
