Southampton Relegated From Premier League With Seven Games To Go

Southampton were relegated from the Premier League in record-setting time after a 3-1 defeat at Tottenham on Sunday ended their brief stay in the top-flight. Brennan Johnson struck twice in the first half and Mateus Fernandes’s late reply was too late to stop bottom of the table Southampton crashing back to the Championship. Beaten for the 25th time in 31 games, Southampton are the first Premier League team to be relegated with seven matches still to play. Ipswich and Derby were relegated with six games left in 1994-95 and 2007-08 respectively. Ivan Juric’s side are also still one shy of matching Derby’s 2007-08 record low Premier League total points of 11. Juric, whose team are without a win in their last seven league matches, admitted this week that avoiding the record low points tally is Southampton’s only target for the rest of their dismal season. “It’s a difficult day, a tough day but I see the fans, how they love their players and their team. It’s something incredible,” Juric said. “This experience has …

File photo of Rodrigo Bentancur.© AFP Tottenham midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur was charged by the Football Association on Thursday over an alleged misconduct breach for a remark made on Uruguayan TV about team-mate Son Heung-min. The Uruguay international had been asked in June by the host of the Canal 10 show for a Spurs player’s shirt, to which he replied: “Sonny’s? It could be Sonny’s cousin too as they all look the same.” British anti-discrimination charity Kick It Out said it had received a “significant number” of complaints related to the comment. Bentancur apologised to the South Korea international and Spurs skipper, who said his team-mate had “made a mistake”. A statement from the FA said Bentancur had been charged with an alleged breach of its rules in relation to a media interview. “It’s alleged that the Tottenham midfielder has breached FA Rule E3.1 as he acted in an improper manner and/or used abusive and/or insulting words and/or brought the game into disrepute,” the statement said. “It’s further alleged that this constitutes an ‘aggravated …

Manchester City Fined Over Chaotic Scenes In Spurs Match

The Manchester City vs Spurs game had ended in a 3-3 draw. Manchester City have been fined 120,000 pound ($152,000) after their players surrounded referee Simon Hooper in the closing moments of their 3-3 draw with Tottenham earlier this month. Hooper made the contentious call to bring play back after he initially played advantage following Emerson Royal’s mistimed challenge on Erling Haaland. Haaland was able to get back to his feet and produce a through ball which sent Jack Grealish away, but Hooper blew his whistle to end a promising attack. It sparked an animated reaction from City’s players, with top-scorer Haaland in particular incensed. Haaland expressed his frustration again at full-time and later made clear his bemusement with a post on social media site X, formerly known as Twitter. The Football Association has now fined City after they admitted their players behaved in an improper way. “Manchester City FC have been fined £120,000 after their players surrounded a match official at the Premier League game against Tottenham Hotspur FC on Sunday 3 December,” an …
