India Open Athletics Series: New coach in tow, Pooja narrowly misses out on NR, looks to win Jr Worlds crown soon | Sport-others News

4 min readNew DelhiApr 12, 2026 07:00 AM IST Pooja’s three attempts at the 14-year national record for women’s high jump may have failed but the Haryana teenager achieved the goal she had manifested, the 1.90m mark, and a new personal best, on Saturday at the India Open Athletics Series at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi. This is the first time any Indian high jumper has touched the 1.90m mark after Sahaha Kumari’s national record of 1.92m in 2012. 19-year-old Pooja, who is unbeaten at the national level in her past six competitions, moved past her previous personal best of 1.89m which she achieved during her title-winning performance at the Asian Athletics Championships 2025. “I know I missed the national record but a new personal best is good for me. Main soch ke aayi thi ki aaj toh 1.90m karna hai. (I had manifested that I would achieve 1.90m today),” said Pooja after her performance. While Pooja cleared the qualification mark of 1.80m set for the Asian Games, the Commonwealth Games mark of …

With guruji in tow, Sachin Yadav surges ahead

With guruji in tow, Sachin Yadav surges ahead

When Sachin Yadav steps on the track, the crowd begins to whisper in acknowledgement of his presence. His 6’ 5’’ frame is both unusual and unmissable at the same time. And when he hurls the javelin, the whispers turn in a cheer. On Wednesday, he registered a personal best of 84.39m at the 38th National Games in Uttarakhand to break a decade-long National Games Record. He was mobbed by the media soon after. Most had the same question, “What mindset did you come here with?” Undeterred by fall Yadav wasn’t jumping in delight. He didn’t attempt to manufacture a headline grabbing one-liner either. “I just felt that I had to give my best. I had no number in mind. I just wanted to give my best,” was all that he said. And he had to pull out his best, considering the fact that Yadav endured a fall at the beginning of the competition. “In the first throw, I slipped, so got worried in my mind that I got hurt in my leg.” His old pair …

With twin-golds and coach Jiva in tow, Satish Kumar aims big

Satish Kumar has hit a purple patch at the best possible time. After winning the 2025 National Games mixed doubles gold in badminton with Aadya Variyath, Satish also won the gold medal in the men’s singles category. The feat is unique to the sport since not many elite shuttlers opt for a combination of singles and mixed doubles. But Satish see this as a challenge. “That’s the challenge we [Satish and his coach] want. Nobody has done it so we want to make it happen,” said Satish, speaking to reporters on the sidelines of National Games 2025. Influence of coach Jiva Nair An interesting feature of Satish and Aadya is that their training and off-season preparation happens in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, at the Asia Badminton Academy. The primary reason for this is Jiva Nair, his coach, who resides in Malaysia. The association started when Satish was a teenager. “I went for a one-month camp with him. I have seen him do well with the Malaysian national team and people suggested him to me,” he recalled. …
