As conditions were favourable for the further advance of the southwest monsoon in Tamil Nadu over the next three to four days starting today, the weather office in Chennai said that heavy rain is expected in more than 15 districts of the State. A latest bulletin from the Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai today said that heavy rain with thunderstorm and lightning with gusty winds with speeds reaching 40-50 kmph is expected to occur at Western Ghats areas of Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari, Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Erode, Salem, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Tirupattur, Vellore, Ranipet, Tiruvannamalai,Villupuram, Kallakurichi, Theni, Dindigul, Cuddalore and Mayiladuthurai districts. The southwest monsoon, which set over Kerala on June 4, marking the beginning of the four-month-long rainy season in India, advanced into North Bengal and the northeastern States on Tuesday (June 9, 2026). North Bengal is the gateway to the eight northeastern States. The weather office said conditions remain favourable for further advance of the monsoon into eastern, central and western India in the next four to five days. A forest tracker on Monday died in Junagadh after a tranquilising dart hit him during the rescue operation of a lioness. The incident happened on Sunday evening in a Visavadar village, following which the tracker died “of overdose of tranquilizing drug” at Junagadh Civil Hospital. The deceased tracker has been identified as Ashraf Ali Chauhan, in his late 20s. He worked as a tracker under the outsourcing policy of the state government. Elaborating on the details, Conservator of Forests (Junagadh Range) Ram Ratan Nala said, “The incident happened near Nani Monpari village of Visavadar in Junagadh where a lioness had killed a minor boy. A team of forest officials had reached there to rescue the lioness while also calling a team of wildlife veterinary doctors. The rescue team had other trackers too, including Chauhan.
