Tracks Blocked As Protests, Violence Break Out In Parts Of Bengal Over Waqf Act

Kolkata: There was tension in at least two pockets of West Bengal on Friday afternoon following protests by members of a community against the Waqf Amendment Act. Tension prevailed at Nimtita and Suti in minority-dominated Murshidabad district on Friday, following clashes between the protesters and the security personnel. At Nimtita railway station, protesters blocked railway tracks for hours and vandalised railway properties. Railway Police Force personnel later had to resort to lathicharge to bring the situation under control. The protesters had also thrown stones at the security personnel, some of whom were injured. Later, Border Security Force personnel were deployed in the area and, as per the latest available information, the situation is largely under control. Clashes also broke out between protesters and the state police personnel at the Sajur Crossing area under Suti police station in Murshidabad district on Friday, as the protesters reportedly threw stones and crude bombs towards police personnel. The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety just published a study that found that using smartphone apps to monitor driver behavior, and then providing summaries of that behavior via text message or a data dashboard, leads to safer driving. Researchers borrowed techniques from usage-based insurance (UBI) programs, in which insurance companies use smartphone apps to measure dangerous driving behaviors, like hard braking, sudden acceleration, and speeding. Rather than rely on actuarial data, like driving records and vehicle type, UBI programs use real-time data from app trackers to determine premiums. These are typically opt-in programs, marketed as a way to lower premiums. But if your driving isn’t as safe as you think, it can lead to higher monthly payments. Most people have an aversion to being tracked in real-time by their insurance company. The Confederation of All India Rail Users Association (CAIRUA) has called upon the State government and the police to consider an intensified surveillance over railway tracks in the wake of the increasing sabotage attempts and recurring incidents of suicides. The confederation functionaries pointed out that the recent series of incidents had created a huge safety scare among railway employees and passengers which should be addressed through all possible safety fortification measures. According to them, it was a close shave for passengers in two major incidents in Kozhikode and Thrissur districts, where hazardous objects were found on railway tracks. The impact would have been unpredictable if the trains were in good speed, they said. A communication issued by the confederation said there should be intensified day and night patrol on railway tracks with the support of a security team. Paris, France: Traffic at the Paris Gare du Nord train station was halted on Friday after a World War II bomb was found on tracks leading to France’s busiest terminal. The unexploded bomb was found “in the middle of the tracks” about 2.5 kilometres (1.5 miles) from the station overnight during maintenance work carried out in the northern Paris suburb of Saint Denis, the national SNCF rail company said. The Gare du Nord station lies in the north of the French capital and is the country’s busiest train hub, hosting the Eurostar trains in addition to regional and suburban service, and seeing some 700,000 passengers daily, according to the SNCF. The bomb “dated to the Second World War,” the RER B suburban train wrote in a post on X.
