Kerala Assembly: Minister says Transport dept mulls pre-licence training in schools for Plus Two students

John | Photo Credit: H.VIBHU The Transport department is mulling an intervention in the school curriculum to provide pre-licence training to Plus Two higher secondary students, Kerala Minister for Transport C.P. John has said. Discussions would be held in this regard with the General Education department, the Minister said in reply to questions in the Assembly on Tuesday on the matter of licences and services provided by the Motor Vehicles Department (MVD). The Minister said the idea was to provide these students’ licences by the time they finish Plus Two (when they turn 18). Nearly 1.5 lakh licences, including new ones and those renewed, were issued in a month. This came to 18 lakh a year, he said. Ramprasad Reddy on Saturday said that there were no plans to privatise the Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC). In a statement, the Minister said Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu had held a high-level review meeting and announced a series of initiatives aimed at modernising the public sector transport. Highlighting the successful completion of one year of the Stree Shakti scheme, the Minister said it was not a financial burden on the APSRTC, rather a social responsibility. He said as part of broader modernisation efforts, APSRTC depots would be upgraded through the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model and the government had pledged continued support to the APSRTC employees. The Minister claimed that the coalition government had successfully revived the APSRTC after a period of decline in the previous five years. “The government now is steering the APSRTC towards a new phase of growth and transformation,” he said. …
