Alamgir added that good relations with India will depend on whether the treaty is renewed. The BNP spokesperson’s remarks also come days after Bangladesh approved a mega project to build a barrage on the Padma river, which is what the Ganges is known as in the neighbouring country, in order to “negate the negative impact” of the Farakka Barrage in West Bengal. The Farakka Barrage in Bengal has been a sensitive issue for Bangladesh, with Dhaka stating that it has caused salinity intrusion due to reduced …

India says Indus Waters Treaty will stay in abeyance till Pakistan mends ways

India has reiterated that the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) will be held in abeyance till “the global epicentre of terror” Pakistan mends its ways.  Pakistan “must uphold the sanctity of human life before talking of upholding the sanctity of treaties”, India’s Permanent Representative P Harish said on Thursday at an event held in the UN to mark World Water Day. “India has always been a responsible upper riparian state”, he said. “But responsibility is a two-way street. Pakistan must unconditionally abjure terrorism as an instrument of its state policy”, as per IANS. India hits back at Pakistan over IWT, cites wars and terror attacks Harish was responding to Pakistan`s raising of the IWT as if it were an aggrieved party, impinging on a high-level event commemorating International Water Day, which focused on the UN Sustainable Development Goal of ensuring access to safe water and sanitation for all. According to IANS, India signed the IWT “in good faith, in a spirit of goodwill and friendship”, but “Pakistan violated this spirit by inflicting three wars and thousands …

(AFP) As Bangladesh formally seeks the extradition of its ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who has been sentenced to death by the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT), questions are mounting over whether India can legally deny the request under existing treaties and Indian law. How India Putting Indus Waters Treaty In Abeyance To Punish Pakistan Is A Well-Calibrated Step

Last Updated:May 28, 2025, 01:03 IST The government has drawn up short-term, mid-term, and long-term plans to ensure that putting this treaty into abeyance will work for the welfare of India’s population The Indus Waters Treaty of 1960 sought to divide the water of the Indus river and its tributaries equitably between India and Pakistan. (Representational image: PTI) A day after the attack on innocent civilians in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam town on April 22, a series of decisions were made by the cabinet committee on security headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to teach Pakistan a lesson. One of the more keenly watched ones among them is how the Indus Waters Treaty will be put into abeyance. Even in his rallies across multiple states after India’s precise strikes on Pakistani terror bases, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has spoken elaborately that India will not back down. This move by India is certainly making the neighbouring nation sweat, he said in a public address on Tuesday. But the question remains, has India been able to achieve …

WHO adopts first global pandemic treaty: Why it redefines public health despite the US absence | Health and Wellness News

WHO adopts first global pandemic treaty: Why it redefines public health despite the US absence | Health and Wellness News

After three years of intense negotiations, the World Health Organisation (WHO) on Tuesday adopted the world’s first pandemic agreement during the ongoing annual meeting of the inter-governmental body. The adoption came after the approval by vote a day ago by member state delegations — there were 124 votes in favour, none against and 11 abstentions. The agreement is historic because it sets out principles for better international coordination to strengthen the global health architecture for pandemic prevention, preparedness and response. It hopes to ensure equitable and timely access to diagnostics, vaccines and therapeutics — something that was not seen during the Covid-19 pandemic where richer countries had surplus vaccines and others struggled to get enough for their population. A victory for public health “The agreement is a victory for public health, science and multilateral action. It will ensure we, collectively, can better protect the world from future pandemic threats. It is also a recognition by the international community that our citizens, societies and economies must not be left vulnerable to again suffer losses like those …

Shivraj Singh Chouhan hails suspension of Indus Treaty, says ‘Nehru gave 80 per cent of water to Pakistan’

Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan hailed the suspension of the Indus Water Treaty as a historic correction benefiting Indian farmers and strengthening national security. New Delhi: Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has strongly defended the government’s suspension of the Indus Water Treaty, calling it a long-overdue reversal of a “historic injustice” inflicted on Indian farmers and the nation. Speaking at a key meeting with farmers’ associations at Pusa Bhavan, Chouhan launched a fierce critique of Pakistan and former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, who signed the treaty in 1960. “Water and blood cannot flow together” Describing the decision to revoke the treaty as a “bold and necessary step”, Chouhan framed it in the context of recent cross-border violence and terror attacks. “This is not an ordinary move; it is a historic correction,” he said. “In 1960, Pandit Nehru handed over more than 80% of the Indus River’s water to Pakistan along with Rs 83 crore, which today amounts to Rs 5,500 crore. This was done despite opposition from India’s water experts.” He described the treaty …
