West Asia war has exposed the fragility of our trillion-dollar AI investment

The US-Israel war in Iran is proving to be a stress test for the infrastructure and supply chains powering the AI boom. It is revealing, with uncomfortable specificity, structural weaknesses that long preceded the war and are now acutely intensified by it. Iranian drones have struck Amazon Web Services (AWS) data centres in the UAE and Bahrain. Strikes on Qatar’s Ras Laffan facility prompted QatarGas to halt production and declare a force majeure, suspending delivery obligations to contracted customers and taking offline a third of the world’s helium supply. Helium is produced as a byproduct of natural gas processing and is essential for semiconductor manufacturing. The Strait of Hormuz, through which East Asian chipmakers source 70 per cent of their energy imports, has been effectively closed for weeks. Depending on how prolonged and intense the war is, there will be second- and third-order impacts on AI development and adoption. This may broadly take three forms. First, an immediate effect already being felt and one that will continue to worsen in the next few weeks is …

Tamil Nadu’s election-year budget bets on welfare, growth – and a trillion-dollar promise | India News

Tamil Nadu’s election-year budget bets on welfare, growth – and a trillion-dollar promise | India News

Presenting what is likely to be the last budget of the DMK government’s current tenure, Tamil Nadu Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu on Tuesday framed the state’s interim budget for 2026-27 as both a welfare ledger and a political statement – one that argues high growth and high redistribution can coexist. Invoking Thiruvalluvar and recalling former Chief Minister M Karunanidhi’s 1971 advice that a budget must mobilise resources rather than slow development for want of funds, Thennarasu’s speech, stretched over 100 pages, blended cultural nationalism, social justice, and an economic ambition now central to Tamil Nadu’s political narrative: a one-trillion-dollar economy. “The focus should be on identifying the means to mobilise the necessary financial resources for a well-conceived plan, rather than reducing plan expenditure or slowing the pace of development on the grounds that adequate funds are not presently available. Our budget must serve as an instrument for planned development, without in any way diminishing the momentum of constructive work,” Thennarasu said. The government reiterated that Tamil Nadu recorded double-digit economic growth of 11.19% in 2024–25, …

Tamil Nadu Economic Survey says trillion-dollar economy achievable at current growth rate

Tamil Nadu Economic Survey says trillion-dollar economy achievable at current growth rate

Tamil Nadu can achieve its trillion-dollar economy milestone by 2031 if it sustains the 2024-25 nominal growth rate of 16%, “with an assumption of 2% (medium-term rate) rise in the value of dollar against rupee per annum in the medium term,” according to the Economic Survey of Tamil Nadu 2025-26. “With 3.5% short term rate of rise of dollar value, it may be delayed for a year,” said the Survey prepared by the State Planning Commission (SPC) with details from the Finance Department and several subject experts. The Survey was handed over to Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Monday (February 16, 2026). Commenting on the second Economic Survey of the DMK government, J. Jeyaranjan, Executive Vice Chairman of the SPC, in his foreword, mentioned the State focused and continues to focus on both growth and social justice, resulting in a robust model for many other States to emulate. “This unique model has resulted in a balanced sectoral growth. In fact, our double-digit growth recorded last year was spearheaded by the secondary sector, which our national …

BJP’s lack of pro-growth policies make trillion-dollar economy target for U.P. a pipe dream, says Samajwadi Party

BJP’s lack of pro-growth policies make trillion-dollar economy target for U.P. a pipe dream, says Samajwadi Party

Amid the Uttar Pradesh government’s push for a trillion-dollar economy by 2029, the Samajwadi Party (SP) on Wednesday (December 24, 2025) ridiculed the target, claiming that a lack of serious pro-growth policies to address structural economic issues make the trillion-dollar target implausible and impossible. The SP said that U.P.’s per capita income remains at roughly half the national average with agriculture still accounting for just over one-fifth of Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) but employing over half the workforce, indicating massive productivity gaps in the agricultural sector. “U.P.’s GSDP was ₹22.57 lakh crore in 2022-23, approximately $271 billion at 2023 exchange rates and only ₹25.48 lakh crore in 2023-24. Reaching $1 trillion by 2029 requires sustained real growth of 30% plus annually—far above Uttar Pradesh’s historical performance and India’s national average. Between 2012-13 and 2021-22, U.P.’s real GSDP grew at just 5.3% annually, below even the national average of 5.6% let alone the required rate, despite U.P. benefitting from an incomparable demographic dividend and central government investment,” the party said in a statement. The State …
