The Supreme Court on Thursday refused to grant interim bail to self-styled godman and rape convict Asaram on medical grounds but allowed him to engage a trained caretaker of his choice for round-the-clock assistance, based on recommendations in an AIIMS medical report, news agency ANI reported. A bench of Justices MM Sundresh and PB Varale took note of the report submitted by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) on July 31, which stated that while Asaram did not require hospitalisation, he needed continuous medical assistance. The Supreme Court on Tuesday said it may constitute a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to ensure a fair, transparent and thorough investigation into allegations of police excesses and incidents of violence during the recent nationwide protests over alleged irregularities in examinations and the NEET paper leak. A bench headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, and comprising Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V. Mohana, made the observations while hearing a batch of petitions alleging police brutality against students during the demonstrations. Court considers independent probe At the outset of the hearing, the bench questioned why there should not be an independent investigation into the allegations of police excesses. “Whosoever committed excesses, took law in their hands should be taken to task,” the Chief Justice said. After hearing submissions from the parties, the bench observed that an impartial investigation into all allegations relating to police action against student protesters was necessary. “Once there is violation of defined protocol, law must take care of it,” the bench said. The Supreme Court on Friday said it would “very closely monitor” the Centre’s road map for institutional reforms in the National Testing Agency (NTA) and measures to prevent future paper leaks, while directing the Union government to file a comprehensive affidavit detailing its proposals, including the feasibility of shifting NEET to a computer-based testing (CBT) mode, cybersecurity safeguards and examination security protocols. Narasimha and Alok Aradhe, hearing a batch of petitions seeking structural reforms in the conduct of the NEET-UG examination following the alleged 2026 paper leak controversy, posted the matter for further hearing on July 27 after Solicitor General Tushar Mehta sought a few days’ time to present a “holistic view” of the reforms being undertaken. MANJUNATH The government has appointed a team of lawyers headed by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta to conduct trial against extradited Pakistani-Canadian terrorist Tahawwur Hussain Rana in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack case. In a notification, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said the appointment has been made exercising the powers conferred under the National Investigation Agency Act, 2008 and the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023. The central government hereby appoints a team of Special Public Prosecutors headed by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta and comprising Additional Solicitor General S. V. Raju, senior advocate Dayan Krishnan and advocate Narender Mann for conducting trial and other matters related to the case RC-04/2009/NIA/DLI on behalf of the NIA before the NIA Special Courts at Delhi, High Court of Delhi and Supreme Court of India for three years or till the completion of trial of the said case, whichever is earlier, the notification said. The Supreme Court on Friday allowed students – who dropped out of their courses between 5-18 November 2024 – to register for the JEE (Advanced), reported Indian Express. Passing the order, the bench of Justices B R Gavai and A G Masih noted a press release by the Joint Admission Board (respondent number 2) on 5 November 2024 which said the students who cleared their Class 12 board exams in 2023, 2024, and 2025 would be eligible to take the JEE(Advanced). However, it was withdrawn 13 days later. According to the fresh Joint Admission Board release, dated 18 November, only those who clear their Class 12 exam in 2024 or 2025 will be eligible for the JEE(Advanced).
