Historic shift: Vijay’s Cabinet marks Tamil Nadu’s best SC representation till date

Among all the Cabinets formed in Tamil Nadu so far, the one led by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay features the highest number of Ministers from the Scheduled Caste (SC) community. On Thursday, 23 Ministers took office. Among them, those belonging to the SC community include S. Kamali from Avinashi, V. Gandhiraj from Arakkonam, P. Mathan Raja from Ottapidaram, D. Logesh Tamilselvan from Rasipuram, and K. Thennarasu from Sriperumbudur. P. Viswanathan, Congress MLA from Melur, has also been inducted into the Cabinet and assigned the Higher Education portfolio. Apart from them, Rajmohan, who won in the Egmore constituency, is already serving as the Minister for School Education. This marks the first time that seven people from the SC community have been included simultaneously in the Tamil Nadu Cabinet. Prior to this, when the DMK Cabinet was reshuffled in 2024, four Ministers belonged to the SC community. When M.K. Stalin reshuffled his Cabinet in 2024, SC Ministers C.V. Shahjahan, elected from the Papanasam constituency, to be inducted into the Cabinet headed by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay. The induction will take place later.  National president of the party K.M. Kader Mohideen said there was a suggestion within the high-level committee that the party should seek two berths in the Ministry since it has two MLAs. “I was authorised to take a decision. I selected Mr. Shahjahan to represent the party in the Cabinet. We will also ask for one more berth subsequently,” he said. The party also has another MLA elected from Vaniyambadi. T.N. Cabinet portfolios: CM Vijay to hold Home; Finance for Sengottaiyan; Aadhav Arjuna gets PWD

A Lok Bhavan press release stated the Chief Minister had recommended to the Governor the portfolio and subject allocations for the Council of Ministers, who were sworn in along with him on May 10. The Governor has approved the recommendations. Mr. Vijay will hold key portfolios including Home, Police, IAS and IPS, Indian Forest Service, District Revenue Officers, Special Programme Implementation, Women Welfare, Youth Welfare, Welfare of Children, Aged, and Differently-abled Persons, Municipal Administration, and Urban and Water Supply. N. Anand, the number two in the Cabinet, will handle the portfolios of Rural Development and Water Resources. Aadhav Arjuna has been allotted the Public Works Department (Buildings, Highways and Minor Ports) and Sports Development. K.G.
