Soon after news of the raids broke on Wednesday morning, senior leaders came out in support of Vijayan and cadres took to the streets raising slogans against the BJP and the ED. The party’s social media handles which have been silent after the defeat in the elections, have also sprung into action in support of Vijayan. After the Assembly elections, Vijayan had appeared politically weakened within the party, with the massive verdict against the LDF being interpreted as a mandate against him and his style of functioning as Chief Minister. Congress leaders Shashi Tharoor, Ramesh Chennithala, K.C. Venugopal, V.D. Satheesan, Kodikunnil Suresh and others celebrate at Indira Bhavan in Thiruvananthapuram the UDF’s victory in Kerala Assembly elections on May 4, 2026. | Photo Credit: Nirmal Harindran Kerala has long kept its own counsel at the ballot box. In the Assembly elections of 2026, the electorate of this politically alert State delivered what many observers had anticipated — a decisive verdict, where the United Democratic Front (UDF), led by the Indian National Congress, is returning to power with a thumping majority, ending the Left Democratic Front’s (LDF) unprecedented decade-long run in office. Equally notable is the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance’s (NDA) entry, with two former Union Ministers crossing the threshold into the Kerala Assembly. The results show a UDF majority with 97 seats (out of 140), against the LDF’s 35 and the NDA’s 3. The pattern across the recent electoral cycles tells its own story. The 2024 Lok Sabha result, in which the UDF swept 18 of the 20 parliamentary seats, was the …

Kerala Assembly poll: UDF sweeps central Kerala region

Kerala Assembly poll: UDF sweeps central Kerala region

Uma Thomas bettered her own record to win by a margin of 50,211 votes | Photo Credit: H.VIBHU It was a whitewash for the UDF in the four central Kerala districts, thus adding to the impressive show of the front across the State. The LDF drew a blank in Ernakulam (14 Assembly seats), Kottayam (nine seats) and Idukki districts (five seats). However, Thrissur district provided it with the much-needed solace where it outperformed its rivals and prevented a UDF clean sweep in the region. The LDF won nine of the 13 seats in the district leaving just four to the UDF. Though Ernakulam is historically considered a UDF bastion, the LDF had snatched five seats away from the UDF in 2021. However, the Congress and its allies won all the seats and ensured the defeat of P. Rajeeve, a CPI (M) strongman and the Industries Minister in the outgoing Ministry, in the process.
