Motsepe addressed several issues including last month’s Africa Cup in Morocco and the hosting of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations again next month. Motsepe said the women’s tournament will go ahead at planned from March 17 to April 3, rebuffing reports that Morocco wanted to withdraw from hosting the tournament for the third time straight after South Africa offered to take over. “Morocco came to assist. There were many countries that wanted to host it, but because we didn’t have time, our standards were very, very high,” Motsepe said. “As we speak now, we still have an engagement with Morocco. Man Who Burned Uganda Olympics Athlete Rebecca Cheptegei To Death, Dies Himself; Athlete’s Father Reacts

A Kenyan man who killed Ugandan runner Rebecca Cheptegei has died from injuries sustained when he poured petrol over the Olympic athlete, the hospital treating him said Tuesday. The attack on the 33-year-old has been greeted with sorrow and anger as yet another horrific example of gender-based violence in Kenya. Police said Dickson Ndiema Marangach, 32, assaulted Cheptegei in her home in Endebess near the Ugandan border on September 1. The mother-of-two suffered 80 percent burns and died last week. Marangach also incurred 41 percent burns, according to the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in the Rift Valley city of Eldoret. “He developed respiratory failure as a result of the severe airway burns and sepsis that led to his eventual death,” the hospital said in a statement, adding that he died at 6:30 pm (1530 GMT) on Monday. “We consider his case as justice delivered,” Cheptegei’s father, Joseph Cheptegei, told AFP. “We’re now only interested in burying our daughter,” he added, expressing exhaustion over the ordeal. Cheptegei is due to be buried on …

Mpox Risk Low for Those Outside Affected Countries, More Clarity Needed on Death Rate, Spread Factors: Ex-WHO Expert

The risk of Mpox to the general population in countries outside the affected regions remains low but there is a need to learn more about the death rate and the factors influencing the spread of the virus, a former medical officer at the World Health Organisation (WHO) told News18. Krutika Kuppalli, former medical officer for Covid-19 and Mpox Health Operations at WHO, said it’s important to increase community engagement and education about Mpox, which includes educating about “risk factors, modes of transmission, signs and symptoms, and how to access care”. “Overall, the risk to the general population outside of the affected countries remains low,” she added. On September 8, the Union Health Ministry said a young male patient, who recently returned from a country with ongoing Mpox transmission, has been identified as a suspected case of the virus. The patient has been isolated at a designated hospital and is reportedly stable. Kuppalli, who has worked at the Geneva-based headquarters of WHO for the emerging diseases and zoonoses unit supporting Covid-19, and more recently Mpox, to …

On a sunny morning at the main cricket oval in Kampala, members of the Ugandan national men’s team are being put through their paces by their new head coach. The Cricket Cranes — clad in their vivid red kit — are training hard for their first ever T20 World Cup, a “dream come true” in a nation where cricket is overshadowed by football as the most popular sport. But they have a tough road ahead in the tournament, which is being jointly hosted by the United States and West Indies and runs from June 1 to June 29. Among their opponents are New Zealand and West Indies, as well as Afghanistan and Papua New Guinea, with the fixtures being held in Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago. Time is not on their side — it was barely a month ago that the Uganda Cricket Association named Indian former first-class cricketer Abhay Sharma as the new head coach of the men’s national team. “Mostly we don’t have time to relax. It’s going to be high …
