Four held in Ujjain for blowing up car in Muharram stunt; police rule out communal angle

Four men, including an Akhara organiser, have been arrested in Madhya Pradesh’s Ujjain for blowing up a car hung to a crane during Muharram processions, officials said on Thursday (June 25, 2026), adding that the National Security Act (NSA) may be invoked against them. The police have, however, ruled out a communal angle behind the act.  According to officials, the stunt took place on Wednesday (June 24, 2026) night during Muharram processions being held at Shere Adaan locality under Badnagar police station range where a van was hung onto a crane and blown up using firecrackers.  Viral videos show a white van hanging through a crane about 40 feet from the ground which is blown up with firecrackers kept inside it, creating a significant explosion, with attendees chanting and raising religious flags. A message on a paper was also pasted on the windshield of the van which read “Le phir aa gaye (Here they come again)”. Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav on Friday expressed grief over the death of a two-and-a-half-year-old boy who fell into a borewell in Ujjain, and announced Rs 4 lakh assistance for the family. Bhagirath slipped into the well at Jhalaria village under Badnagar tehsil, about 75 km from Ujjain, between 7 pm and 7:30 pm on Thursday. He was pulled out after nearly 23 hours of effort but could not be saved. Bhagirath was rushed to a hospital immediately on Friday evening, where doctors declared him dead. “The news of Bhagirath`s death after falling into a borewell in Jhalaria village under Badnagar in Ujjain is extremely sad. Rescue operations are going on to save a three-year-old boy, still trapped at approximately 70 ft depth in a borewell in Jhalariya village, about 75 km from Madhya Pradesh`s Ujjain.   The boy, named Bhagirath Dewasi, fell into a borewell on Thursday, around 7.30 – 8.00 p.m., while the family was grazing sheep in the field. According to family members, a sheep accidentally dislodged the stone covering the borewell. Curious Bhagirath, the youngest of three sons, approached from behind, removed the cover to peer inside, and slipped into the shaft. Bhagirath is the son of Praveen Dewasi, a shepherd originally from Gudanla village in Pali district, Rajasthan. The family had arrived in the area just three days earlier for grazing. His mother witnessed the incident but could not reach him in time. At the time of the incident, Praveen was away in Rajasthan. A massive joint rescue operation by NDRF (from Bhopal) and SDRF teams (from Harda, Indore, and Ujjain) is underway. MP highway to be upgraded to boost Ujjain and Delhi–Mumbai E-way connectivity

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Tuesday approved the development of a four-lane corridor on the Badnawar–Petlawad–Thandla–Timarwani section of National Highway (NH)-752D, with a total length of 80.45 kilometres and an estimated capital cost of Rs 3,839.42 crore, news agency ANI reported. The approved corridor will connect Ujjain to the Timrawani interchange on the Delhi–Mumbai Expressway (DME). The primary objective of the proposed four-lane project corridor is to improve travel efficiency and it is expected to reduce travel time by approximately one hour, ANI reported. According to a press release by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, “The Ujjain-Badnawar section of 70.40 km length has already been upgraded from 2-lane to 4-lane. The instant Badnawar-Timrawani stretch is an existing intermediate lane (5.5m) with poor geometry (Speed 20-50 kmph).” Upgrading this section will complete direct four-lane connectivity from Ujjain to the Timrawani interchange on DME, enabling speeds of 80-100 kilometre per hour, ANI reported.
