Encounter actions in U.P. undermining criminal justice system, making society barbaric, says former U.P. top police officials

Amid the debate over the encounters in Uttar Pradesh, after the State government released figures of such operations, retired Director General of Police rank officials from U.P. on Saturday (June 6, 2026) said through this policy the whole society is “made barbaric”, adversely affecting the growth of the democratic system, adding that these encounter actions fundamentally undermine the criminal justice system and foster a culture of lawlessness.   “Our society has unfortunately given social recognition to such acts of encounters. During the V.P. Singh regime, a Maro Maro [hit hit] campaign was launched in early 1980s. But, for the first time, the State in the last nine years under the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) rule has made encounters an instrument of controlling crime. In a Ghaziabad village, the mother of the victim demanded the accused body must be shown to the family after his encounter. People are accepting encounters as legal, moral acts, which in reality is a barbaric medieval act. Instant justice through encounter, is an extrajudicial killing, a black chapter for the society. Through the …

India-US trade deal: Priyanka Gandhi alleges Centre undermining farmers

Days after the India-US trade deal, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi on Thursday alleged Centre of undermining farmers and workers. In a post on X, Priyanka Gandhi shared a video of Opposition MPs protesting outside the Parliament during the on going Union Budget 2026 session. The leader accused the Centre of working against the interests of farmers and workers. In a statement, Congress leaders alleged that the government first weakened labour rights by introducing the new Labour Codes and later compromised farmers’ interests under pressure from the United States during a trade deal. She claimed that the conditions agreed upon in the reported US trade agreement would severely impact Indian farmers. It said such terms could “break the backbone” of the farming community. Congress leaders argued that the government should protect domestic agriculture rather than accept conditions that may harm rural livelihoods.

IOA president PT Usha accuses sports ministry of undermining sports governance

Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president PT Usha accused the sports ministry of interfering in the affairs of national federations in a strongly worded letter. Usha said the ministry has “undermined the credibility of sports governance”. With the ministry at loggerheads with the IOA for recognising the Indian Golf Union (IGU) elections won by the Harish Kumar Shetty-led faction, Usha said sports minister Mansukh Mandaviya is not being “properly apprised” of various important issues concerning national federations, including the contentious IGU polls. In a letter dated January 2 and signed by the undersecretary, the ministry said the IOA’s act of according recognition to Shetty’s faction can “create avoidable duplication and confusion” which may not withstand legal scrutiny. In her response, Usha said, “The manner in which this letter has been issued appears procedurally incorrect and reflects a lack of verification of the facts on record and a complete non application of mind by the Under Secretary.” “Sir, since I have assumed office in the lOA, it has become more and more apparent that the staff of …

Trump nominees should ‘steer clear’ of undermining polio vaccine, McConnell says | News Today News

Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell, a childhood polio survivor, said any of President-elect Donald Trump’s nominees seeking confirmation should “steer clear” of efforts to discredit the polio vaccine. “Efforts to undermine public confidence in proven cures are not just uninformed — they’re dangerous,” McConnell said in a Friday statement. “Anyone seeking the Senate’s consent to serve in the incoming Administration would do well to steer clear of even the appearance of association with such efforts.” The 82-year-old lawmaker’s statement appeared to be directed at Trump’s nominee for health secretary, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., after a report that one of his advisors filed a petition to revoke approval for the polio vaccine in 2022. It was a sign that Kennedy, who has long advanced the debunked idea that vaccines cause autism, could face resistance in the soon-to-be GOP-controlled Senate. “Mr. Kennedy believes the Polio Vaccine should be available to the public and thoroughly and properly studied,” said Katie Miller, the transition spokeswoman for Kennedy, in response to questions. The New York Times reported Friday that a …

Why Mahayuti, Union govts keen on undermining Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj: Cong

Ahead of the upcoming Maharashtra elections 2024, the Congress on Thursday attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi by posing questions to him on Maharashtra and asked why the Mahayuti and the Union governments keen on “undermining” Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Ahead of Prime Minister Modi`s rallies in Maharashtra, Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh posed three questions to him, including what is his vision to address water scarcity in Marathwada. Why is the Mahayuti and the Union Government keen on “undermining” Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Ramesh asked. “Raigad was the capital of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj – one of India`s greatest sons, whom the Mahayuti Government in Maharashtra and its patron in New Delhi have been undermining,” Ramesh said in a post on X. Seven years ago, the PM laid the foundation stone for a 696-feet statue of Shivaji Maharaj in the Arabian Sea near Mumbai but it has since been silently abandoned by his government, he said. “In a petty effort to spite the people of Maharashtra after their stinging debacle on June 4th, they removed the …
