New Delhi Parliament not bound by Centre’s sedition undertaking: SC The Supreme Court on Friday said that the government’s decision to review the offence of sedition under the old Indian Penal Code (IPC) cannot prevent Parliament from introducing it in the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) as the legislature functions independent of the executive. The observation came while the court was hearing a batch of public interest litigations (PIL) challenging various provisions of BNS, including section 152 that criminalises a host of actions that endanger sovereignty, integrity and unity of the country. The petitioners referred to an undertaking given by Centre in 2022 before the top court that section 124A of the IPC relating to the offence of sedition would be reviewed. Based on this undertaking, the court had in May 2022 ordered all pending trials, appeals and proceedings before any court under section 124A to be kept in abeyance. Jharkhand news: Eleven candidates died while undertaking physical tests during a drive to recruit excise constables in Jharkhand, police said today (September 1).Physical tests under the Jharkhand excise constable competitive examinations began on August 22 in seven centres across Ranchi, Giridih, Hazaribag, Palamu, East Singhbhum and Sahebganj districts. Four deaths happened in Palamu, two persons each died in Giridih and Hazaribag, and one person each in Ranchi’s Jaguar centre, and East Singhbhum’s Mosabani and Sahebganj centres, said IG (Operations) Amol Vinukant Homkar. He said cases of unnatural death were registered and investigations were underway.  Homkar said adequate arrangements, including medical teams, medicines, ambulance, mobile toilets and drinking water, were ensured at all centres. Alleging that the deaths happened due to mismanagement by the authorities, the BJP youth wing demonstrated against the JMM-led government in Ranchi’s Albert Ekka Chowk. The Punjab cabinet decided to file a lawsuit against Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) officials and former prime minister Imran Khan for creating a “hateful narrative against the state institutions,” Dawn, a Pakistan-based publication, stated. The province administration released a statement stating that the decision was made during a meeting of the Punjab cabinet, which was presided over by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. While addressing a press conference in Lahore, Punjab Information Minister Azma Bokhari said the home department had submitted an inquiry report allegedly revealing that PTI members were “spreading mischief inside and outside the (Adiala) jail.” Azma Bokhari alleged that the PTI spread propaganda that Imran Khan was not permitted to meet anyone. She further said that the party was “spreading hate as part of organised propaganda”.
