From CJI’s comment to CJI’s court, full-circle moment for Cockroach Janta Party: ‘Will hear in due course’

A word spoken in a courtroom barely 10 days ago has now returned to the same court as the nub of two petitions. A lot has happened in between, with “cockroach” now becoming the motif of an online movement, taking its name from a comment by the Chief Justice of India. The Instagram-focused social movement Cockroach Janta Party, founded by Abhijeet Dipke (inset) got its name from CJI Surya Kant’s remarks made on a plea by a lawyer seeking Senior Advocate status. (Photos: Insta/PTI File) On Monday, when advocate NK Goswami mentioned his plea against the Cockroach Janta Party before CJI Surya Kant’s bench, and said the satirical movement was tarnishing the image of judiciary, the CJI reportedly remarked, “Don’t take it so sentimentally.” Another petition was filed by advocate Raja Choudhary, who mainly sought a probe into alleged fake lawyers, but also sought action against alleged “commercial exploitation and monetised circulation” of oral courtroom observations, news agency PTI reported. Choudhary said a probe should be carried out by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). …

Cockroach Janta Party’s viral rise leaves founder Dipke’s parents anxious

The meteoric rise of satirical digital outfit Cockroach Janta Party on social media has left the parents of its founder, Abhijeet Dipke, overwhelmed by fears that he could land in trouble or even face arrest. The outfit, now popular as CJP, has garnered over 19 million followers on Instagram since it was founded barely a week ago by Boston University student Dipke, earlier associated with the Aam Aadmi Party. His parents Bhagwan and Anita Dipke, who live in Maharashtra`s Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, told a Marathi news channel on Thursday that they were not keen on letting their son enter politics. The parents said they have lost their sleep after learning about Abhijeet`s move. Cockroach Janata Party, according to Dipke, was born following a controversy over Chief Justice of India Surya Kant using the terms “parasites” and “cockroaches” while pulling up a lawyer for his plea seeking senior designation. Though the CJI later clarified that he was misquoted and his remarks were directed specifically at individuals entering the legal profession through “fake and bogus degrees”, the CJP, …

Mumbai, NCP leader Rohit Pawar on Saturday said Chief Justice of India Surya Kant’s remark likening unemployed youth to parasites and cockroaches was “unacceptable” and was a reflection of intolerance towards criticism and questioning. CJI’s ‘youngsters like cockroaches’ remark unacceptable, reflects intolerance: Rohit Pawar The Karjat Jamkhed MLA said while he has the highest respect for the Indian judiciary, remarks of this nature from a Constitutional authority were deeply hurtful and appeared to mock an entire generation struggling with broken promises, lack of opportunities and rising unemployment. The CJI on Friday likened some unemployed youngsters to cockroaches and said they go on to “become” media, social media and RTI activists and start attacking the system. The comments were made while a bench of CJI Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi was pulling up a lawyer for “pursuing” a senior advocate designation. It said there were already “parasites” in society who attack the system, and asked the petitioner whether he wanted to join hands with them. Pawar, in a statement, noted that though the remarks may have …

On unemployment, she questioned repeated examination paper leaks during the BRS regime. “Why did such lapses occur despite having a capable minister like KT Rama Rao at the helm of affairs? These failures adversely affected two generations of youth, many of whom lost crucial career opportunities,” she said. Answering a question, Kavitha said her differences with her father KCR were strictly political. “I have no issues with my family but I clearly maintain an …
