Barely a month after appointing senior IAS officer Lokhande Prashant Sitaram as the full-time chairperson of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), the Centre on Thursday modified the arrangement, assigning him only the “additional charge” of the post, while he continues as additional secretary in the Union home ministry. Senior IAS officer Lokhande Prashant Sitaram was appointed as the full-time chairperson of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) An order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training’s (DoPT) Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) on July 2 said Lokhande, an IAS officer of the 2001 AGMUT cadre serving as additional secretary in the Department of Home under the Union home ministry, will hold the additional charge “until appointment of regular incumbent to the post or until further orders, whichever is earlier.” Lokhande has been serving as additional secretary in the home ministry since April 1, 2026. The Union home ministry on Friday informed the West Bengal government that 2400 companies of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) would be deployed in the state ahead of assembly elections. The assembly elections in the state would be held in two phases on April 23 and April 29. While 480 companies have already been deployed in the state earlier this month, the centre would deploy another 1920 companies over the next one month in phases. “The first batch of 300 companies would be inducted by March 31. Two more batches of 300 companies each would arrive by April 7 and April 10. By April 13 another 277 companies would arrive. Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel on Wednesday reviewed the state’s preparedness on Wednesday ahead of a civil defence mock drill, carried out as a measure of preparedness in the aftermath of the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack. At a state cabinet meeting chaired by Patel, he instructed all ministers and in-charge secretaries to help district administrations in implementing guidelines issued to states by the Union Home Ministry. CM Patel instructed cabinet ministers to assess the preparedness of district administrations and monitor progress on mock drill activities in their respective districts. He mentioned that the mock drill should not cause panic among citizens, clarifying that its purpose is to raise awareness about security and safety measures.Additionally, the meeting reviewed citizens’ responsibilities in the statewide mock drill. Citizens were advised to cover windows with thick curtains, turn off all lights, and avoid using mobile phones or other light-emitting devices near windows during blackout. In a strategic reshuffle, the Union Government has disbanded the Central Reserve Police Force’s (CRPF’s) Parliament Duty Group (PDG) and merged its personnel into the VIP Security Group (VSG). The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) issued an order on Tuesday, officially “changing the nomenclature” of the 1,400-strong PDG to VSG. This development comes after the MHA’s earlier directive this month to transfer CRPF battalion number 190, previously stationed in Jharkhand’s Chatra district for anti-Naxal operations, to bolster the VIP Security unit. The battalion, comprising over 1,000 personnel, will now strengthen the VSG to ensure comprehensive security coverage for VIPs. The Central Reserve Police Group VIP security wing is presently providing protection to more than 200 people, including Union Home Minister Amit Shah and the Gandhi family of the Congress comprising Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra among others. “The task of the VIP security wing is expanding every day. Centre amends prison manual rules, asks states to address issue of caste-based discrimination In a communication to chief secretaries of all states and Union territories, the Union Home Ministry said to address the issue of any caste-based discrimination of prisoners, ‘Model Prison Manual, 2016’ and the ‘Model Prisons and Correctional Services Act, 2023’ have been amended. The changes have been made in the wake of the October 3, 2024 order of the Supreme Court on the caste-based discrimination of prisoners. According to the new addition in the manual, the prison authorities will have to strictly ensure that there is no discrimination, classification, segregation of prisoners on the basis of their caste. “It shall be strictly ensured that there is no discrimination of prisoners in allotment of any duty or work in prisons on the basis of their caste,” it said.
