Speaking at the 114th international labour conference in Geneva on Tuesday (June 9), BMS delegate Bojji Surendran claimed India had received international recognition for achieving 64% social security coverage for its workforce, describing it as the highest in the world. He said the award was conferred by the International Social Security Association at the World Social Security Summit in Kuala Lumpur. “At a time when global unemployment is projected to remain stable at 4.9%, the persistence of global job gaps affecting more than 400 million people serves as a stark reminder that employment alone is not enough,” the transcript of his speech shared by the organisation stated. He urged that governments and international institutions must focus on decent work that provides fair wages, social protection, occupational safety, and opportunities for skills development. He also expressed concern over …

Gymkhana row: ‘Can take land whenever…’ Union Minister on Delhi elite club eviction move

Published on Jun 02, 2026 05:58 pm IST Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal Khattar has defended the Centre’s decision to reclaim the Delhi Gymkhana Club premises, saying rapid urbanisation and the shrinking availability of developable land have made such provisions increasingly necessary. The remarks come amid a controversy over the government’s May 22 directive asking the club to hand over its premises to the Land and Development Office by June 5. The Centre invoked a public purpose clause in the original lease deed, stating that the property is located in a highly sensitive and strategic area. According to the government, the land is required to strengthen defence infrastructure and meet public security needs. Khattar reiterated that re-entry clauses are an important tool for governments as cities expand and land resources become more constrained.   Home / Videos / Gymkhana row: ‘Can take land whenever…’ Union Minister on Delhi elite club eviction move Disclaimer: We do not own any of the content, ideas, images, or text presented here. Cochin Port trade union forum threatens to escalate stir

The Cochin Port Joint Trade Union Forum has decided to intensify its ongoing agitation into direct industrial action without further notice. The decision, according to the forum, follows alleged unilateral and arbitrary steps taken by the port management to outsource marine and cargo handling operations. The forum has been staging an indefinite strike against the management’s alleged anti-worker policies since March 16 this year. The forum has formally appealed to the chairperson of the port to withdraw any proposal to privatise core functions currently performed by regular or port-appointed contract workers. Raising an alarm over the alleged drastic reduction in the workforce to just 475 regular workers, the forum said the vacancies were not being filled for years, “leading to unbearable workloads, mental stress, and frustration among employees.” While the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways and the Indian Ports Association remain vigilant in averting labour unrest through timely intervention and dialogue with national federations, the industrial relations environment at the Cochin Port remains alarmingly inefficient. Having already served demand notices, the unions said that …
