New Delhi, Feb 5 (PTI) The Delhi High Court on Monday refused to allow a 20-year-old unmarried woman to terminate her 28-week pregnancy. The court had reserved its verdict on the petition last week while orally observing that it would not allow the woman to abort a “completely viable foetus”. “I am not going to allow it for a completely viable foetus of 28 weeks. In the report, I can’t see any abnormality in the foetus. Foeticide cannot be permitted,” the judge had said. In her plea, the woman claimed she got pregnant through a consensual relationship but she came to know about the pregnancy recently. After the doctors refused to terminate the pregnancy as the gestation period was beyond the legally permissible limit of 24 weeks, the woman sought permission from the high court to undergo medical termination of her 28-week pregnancy under the Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) Act. Uttar Pradesh: Unmarried couple kills themselves suicide by hanging

An unmarried couple allegedly committed suicide by hanging themselves in Gunnaur police station area of this district on Friday, police said. The incident took place in Sambhal city of Uttar Pradesh.  According to a PTI report, Superintendent of Police (SP) Kuldeep Singh Gunawat said that a 20-year-old woman named Veena, who worked as a labourer at a brick kiln, hanged herself from a tree this morning. “Shortly after, one Rahul (19) also ended his life,” he added. Gunawat said that Rahul was Veena`s nephew. “Prima facie, it appears that they were having an affair against the wishes of their family members,” the SP added. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination and further investigation is on into the matter, the police said.  In another shocking recent case, an Uttar Pradesh Police Constable posted in Agra allegedly raped and then strangled a 25-year-old Dalit woman. A 20-year-old woman on Monday threw her newborn from the window of her washroom in east Delhi’s New Ashok Vihar, police said. The woman, unmarried, allegedly killed the baby to escape the stigma. She delivered the baby on Monday, they said. The woman who works in Noida in the private sector threw the baby from a height in Jai Ambey Apartments, police said. When the locals found the baby lying on the road, they took him to Metro hospital Noida, from where he was shifted to LBS Hospital where he was declared brought dead, a senior police officer said. Despite Supreme Court judgment, abortion for unmarried women after 20 weeks a catch-22

When Mumbai-based Shalini* walked into the State-run J.J. Hospital in December last year seeking an abortion, she was turned away. Doctors at the hospital decided that her case was legally complicated. Her pregnancy had crossed 20 weeks, she was unmarried and the reason for her pregnancy was determined “as due to failure of contraception”. She then approached the Wadia Hospital, a charitable institution, which too turned her away.  Shalini wanted to discontinue her pregnancy as she was not ready to have the baby. When her pleas to two hospitals fell on deaf ears, Shalini had to finally move the Bombay High Court citing the Supreme Court judgment to get a favourable recourse.  Despite the fact that in September last year, a three-judge Bench of the Supreme Court passed a judgment that unmarried women too can terminate their pregnancy until 24 weeks, the situation on the ground remains dismal.
