Hours after the Uttarakhand government released a list of four workers still missing after an avalanche hit their work site in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district Friday, authorities on Sunday said another body has been recovered, taking the death toll in the incident to five. Ishwari Prasad, father of 23-year-old Anil Kumar from Sitarganj village of Udham Singh Nagar district, made frantic phone calls after learning of the avalanche and was told that his son was safe. However, on Sunday morning, Prasad learnt that Anil was among those still missing. Story continues below this ad “(Initially) I was informed that Anil was safe and in a hospital in Joshimath. The next day, newspapers carried articles saying he was safe. However, when I asked the authorities to help me connect with him, they could not do so,” he said. New Delhi: Forty-six workers of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) were rescued from the debris of an avalanche that hit Uttarakhand’s Chamoli on Friday, while nine are yet to be retrieved. Four of the workers are critical. All rescued workers are undergoing treatment at the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) camp in Mana. Over 65 personnel plowed through almost seven feet of snow overnight in the area between Mana village and Mana Pass, near the Indo-Tibetan border, even as snow storms and poor visibility hampered rescued operations. The urgency to rescue the remaining workers increased as the state’s Meteorological Department issued a rain and snowfall alert in Chamoli district. Chances of light rain have also been predicted in Dehradun, Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag, Tehri, Pauri, Pithoragarh, Bageshwar, Almora, Nainital and Champawat. According to a list released by the Uttarakhand State Disaster Management Authority, the trapped labourers are from Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir, among other states. An avalanche hit snow-capped Mana at 7:17 am this morning, five kilometres from the Badrinath shrine in Uttarakhand, trapping 35 Border Roads Organisation workers. Twenty-two workers managed to run to safety when the avalanche came, and are now getting aid at the Army camp. 57 workers were struck when the avalanche came but 22 managed to run to safety and have been taken to the Army camps, the search for the remaining 35 was launched and the operation is still on. Twenty-four workers are still missing, but 11 have been rescued and sent to the Army camp near Mana, a village bordering Tibet. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said that 16 workers were rescued so far and that a rescue operation was under way. “57 of the BRO workers were trapped in the avalanche, out of which 16 workers have been rescued. All preparations have been made. We are taking help from the ITBP. The district administration and all others are in touch, and we are trying to rescue all as soon as possible,” he told ANI. The avalanche buried a camp of the Border Roads Organisation between Mana and Badrinath, Chamoli District Magistrate Sandeep Tiwari said. Uttarakhand: The Defence Geoinformatics Research Establishment (DGRE), a laboratory of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), today (December 29) issued an orange alert for an avalanche at an altitude of over 3,000 metres in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district over the next 24 hours. The alert is for a period of 24 hours from 5:00 pm on Sunday (December 29) to 5:00 pm on Monday (December 30). Uttarakhand State Disaster Management Authority Joint Chief Executive Officer Mohammad Obaidullah Ansari wrote to the district magistrate of Chamoli and drew his attention to the DGRE’s orange alert (level 3) for the area. He asked him to take appropriate safety and precautionary measures in view of the alert. All officials concerned should be in alert mode, he said in a communication to the district magistrate.
