After record T20I defeat, India head coach Gautam Gambhir explains Sanju Samson’s England snub

3 min readUpdated: Jul 8, 2026 07:50 AM IST India head coach Gautam Gambhir opened up on the team’s decision to drop Sanju Samson from the playing XI during the ongoing England series to accommodate young sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi at the top of the order. Shortly after India were bundled out for a paltry 76 – their second-lowest score ever – in response to England’s 201 at Trent Bridge on Tuesday, Gambhir reviewed the decision to omit Samson from the batting order. The 125-run defeat marked the world champions’ first defeat by more than 100 runs. 37 years later and 6,450 kms away, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s debut carried the familiar thrill of a fearless teenager

For Indian cricket, teenage debuts have always carried a strange electricity. They are not just team-sheet decisions. They are acts of faith. A dressing room opens its door, a national cap is placed on a young head, and an entire country begins the dangerous business of imagining a future from a handful of balls. (X images, AP Photos) Sachin Tendulkar’s first steps in 1989 and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s first steps in 2026 belong to two completely different cricketing worlds. Tendulkar arrived in an age of red-ball severity, radio memory, newspaper romance and Pakistan’s fast-bowling fire. Sooryavanshi has arrived in an age of IPL noise, viral clips, tactical match-ups, social media verdicts and instant mythology. One was 16, the other 15. One came through Bombay’s unforgiving domestic machine, the other through Bihar, age-group cricket and franchise-cricket acceleration. Yet the first impression carried an oddly familiar note: the score was small, but the boy did not look small. Tendulkar’s route into the Indian team was not built on marketing or …

England’s short ball ploy pays off against Vaibhav Sooryavanshi

England’s short ball ploy pays off against Vaibhav Sooryavanshi

3 min readJul 4, 2026 08:12 PM IST England had a plan. They may have been in all sorts of turmoil in recent times, but they had done their homework on the youngest-ever cricketer to represent India. “We have some tactical decisions. Just a matter of executing now,” captain Harry Brook said at the toss about their ploy to keep Vaibhav Sooryavanshi in check on his international debut. Sooryavanshi’s debut seemed an inevitability at Manchester, considering the form — or the abject lack of it — of Sanju Samson in the last three matches. Anticipating the move, England had devised a plan against Sooryavanshi. Not that plans always work against the youngster, but today, they did as he only scored a 10-ball 14. England peppered the prodigy with short balls. Every delivery came with a disclaimer: age is of little relevance in the big boys’ club. Sooryavanshi swung and missed the first two deliveries he faced off Josh Tongue. His maiden international run was almost anti-climactic to the build-up: an inside-edged single while trying to …

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi breaks Sachin Tendulkar’s record, becomes youngest to debut for India

1 min readJul 4, 2026 06:35 PM IST It is happening. At 15 years old, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi on Saturday became the youngest to play international cricket for the India. The teenage sensation was handed his maiden cap ahead of India’s secont T20I against England at Old Trafford by Tilak Varma, who had captained him in the tri-series that India A had played in Sri Lanka before the senior team’s ongoing tour of Ireland and England. Sooryavanshi has thus broken Sachin Tendulkar’s long standing record for the youngest Indian debutant in men’s international cricket. He has also broken the record for being the youngest Indian in international cricket overall, previously held by Shafali Verma who was a few days older than Sooryavanshi is when she made her debut in September 2019. India captain Shreyas Iyer said at the toss that Sooryavanshi has replaced opener Sanju Samson in the lineup. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s time will come, but India’s call to stick with top 3 justified

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s time will come, but India’s call to stick with top 3 justified

4 min readJul 1, 2026 11:38 PM IST Sanju Samson has been in this space before. In the months leading up to the T20 World Cup, when his form was fluctuating, he witnessed from the sidelines how Ishan Kishan, who was in wilderness at the time, emerged out of nowhere and came for his spot. Such was Ishan’s performance that after his century in Thiruvananthapuram, Samson recalled in a CSK podcast with Abhinav Mukund, “When he scored that hundred, I was like ‘Sanju now you just give it to him boss he deserves it more than you do. You got your chances, you didn’t score runs but there is someone who is in tremendous form’.” It has been six months since that game at his home ground. In between he won back his spot in the middle of the T20 World Cup and single-handedly powered them to a title with three stunning knocks. A mixed IPL came and went with Chennai Super Kings. And now after three outings in the middle so far in the …

Who does Sooryavanshi replace, after India’s top 3 flop against Ireland

5 min readUpdated: Jun 28, 2026 09:42 PM IST For two fixtures in Belfast, India’s team management resisted doing what Ajit Agarkar & Co and before that, the junior selection panel led by Tilak Naidu and S Sharath had done. Having included 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi in the touring party for the tour of Ireland and England T20Is, Agarkar’s selection panel had taken a bold, but right decision – to pick a player when he is not just in form but also riding high on confidence. All the pre-series build-up in Ireland had been around Sooryavanshi. Not the arrival of the world champions. The locals, even though they don’t have their team playing at the FIFA World Cup, had good reason to stay away from the two T20Is in Belfast. In terms of context there was not much at stake. But a 15-year-old arriving in their backyard with separate hotel rooms being arranged for him to stay with his parents and a similar arrangement being put in at the ground for him to change, away from …

3 min readJun 26, 2026 08:40 AM IST Batting prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is on the cusp of making history. The 15-year-old is the youngest Indian man ever to receive a national team call-up, and he could break the great Sachin Tendulkar’s record to become the youngest Indian debutant in international cricket if India decide to play him in the first T20I against Ireland. Sooryavanshi storm brews: tickets rush, windows under threat, Irish rattled | Cricket News

5 min readChennaiJun 25, 2026 10:34 PM IST In Cricket Ireland’s office, there is already a sense of missed opportunity. Since the India tour was finalised only towards the end of March, they couldn’t slot the two T20Is at Dublin’s Malahide cricket stadium, home to 12,000 seats which is now being taken up for a concert series. Instead, as Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is on the cusp of making history by becoming the youngest-ever to play international cricket on Friday, they are finding ways to answer the overwhelming requests to find a seat at the Stormont cricket ground, which at the most can only accommodate 5,000. When Cricket Ireland slotted the fixtures to Belfast, there were apprehensions whether the Indian diaspora would make the trip to the northern most part of the country. The recent violence around the area, only cast more doubts. Instead, ever since Sooryavanshi’s name was included in India’s touring party, the hype around the fixtures has been beyond Cricket Ireland’s (CI) expectations. “My phone is buzzing all the time with people looking for …

Sooryavanshi falters; Ruturaj Gaikwad, Arshad Khan take India A past Sri Lanka A

3 min readMumbaiJun 9, 2026 07:21 PM IST India A began their tri-series campaign in Dambulla with an eight-run victory over Sri Lanka A on Tuesday. The visitors seemed like heading towards a defeat at one stage, but a strong finish with the ball helped them defend a total of 277 and begin the triangular competition with a win. Sri Lanka A made a confident start to their chase of 278 through openers Niroshan Dickwella and Avishka Fernando. The pair added 93 runs for the first wicket and put India A under pressure early in the innings. After the opening stand was broken, captain Sahan Arachchige took charge of the chase. The left-hander played a calm and controlled knock, rotating the strike regularly while punishing loose deliveries. His partnership of 78 runs with Sadeera Samarawickrama for the fourth wicket kept Sri Lanka A firmly in the contest. 1️⃣0️⃣1️⃣ Runs 1️⃣1️⃣4️⃣ Deliveries 6️⃣ fours and 3️⃣ Sixes Vice-captain Ruturaj Gaikwad is adjudged the Player of the Match for his fabulous century 👏🫡 Scorecard ▶️ https://t.co/nwKDTkg1ZY #TriNationSeries …
