In the wake of the ongoing military conflict between India and Pakistan, the Indian Railways Friday ran five special trains, including a Vande Bharat train, to facilitate passengers in the border cities of Jammu, Udhampur and Pathankot. Sources said that around 300 people associated with Indian Premier League (IPL) teams, including cricketers and supporting staff, took a special Vande Bharat train to reach Delhi. On Thursday night, the IPL match between Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings in Dharamsala was called off after flood lights at the HPCA Stadium went off due to security reasons. At present, 10 Vande Bharat sleeper trains are under production for long and medium-distance journeys in the country. The first prototype has been manufactured and underwent field trials. In the heart of St Petersburg, the cultural capital of Russia, lies a locomotive manufacturing factory with a nearly 200-year history. The plant — which had its genesis in the rule of the tsars (Russian emperors), indented later by the Bolshevik movement and named after the October (Oktyabrsky in Russian) Revolution — is now the base of expansion of Russia’s largest rolling stock manufacturing company, Transmashholding (TMH), and its ambitious plans to produce India’s ultramodern Vande Bharat sleeper trains, meant for long-distance overnight journeys. Spread over 42 hectares, the Oktyabrsky Electric Car Repair Plant (OEVRZ) manufactures metro cars and carriage models for St Petersburg. A part of TMH group, OEVRZ will provide services in manufacturing the Vande Bharat sleeper trains. Indian Railways had on September 27, 2023, signed a contract with Kinet Railway Solutions Limited, an Indo-Russia joint venture that entails a major shareholding by TMH for the supply of 1,920 Vande Bharat sleeper coaches. The travel time for Shatabdi Express, currently taking about five hours, will also be reduced by 20 minutes. The Bengaluru division of South Western Railway (SWR) conducted a speed trial on the Bengaluru-Jolarpettai section on December 5, aiming to increase the speed limit from 110 km/h to 130 km/h.
