How Mammootty’s real debut movie got shelved and MT Vasudevan Nair saved his career | Malayalam News

Mammootty’s career exemplifies the popular adage “hard work pays off.” Despite having no prior connection to the entertainment industry and initially possessing a very limited skill set, Mammootty persevered, honing his craft, and eventually rose through the ranks to become a formidable thespian and a megastar in Malayalam cinema. In a career spanning over five decades, he has appeared in more than 400 films across Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Hindi, and English, winning the National Film Award for Best Actor three times, the second-most by any artiste in the country, a record he shares with Kamal Haasan and Ajay Devgn. The shelved debut and MT Vasudevan Nair’s timely intervention Although Mammootty made his on-screen debut in director KS Sethumadhavan’s Anubhavangal Paalichakal (1971), which featured Sathyan, Prem Nazir, and Sheela, it wasn’t until 1980 that Mammootty earned his first credited role. This came in Azad’s Vilkkanundu Swapnangal (1980), penned by Jnanpith awardee MT Vasudevan Nair, in which the name “Mammootty” first appeared on screen in the cast list on the title card. However, Vilkkanundu Swapnangal wasn’t …

4 min readKochiMar 23, 2026 03:16 PM IST Although Meera Vasudevan has appeared in several movies since then, she is still most known for her tear-jerking performance in director Blessy’s Thanmathra, alongside Mohanlal. As the wife of a man grappling with Alzheimer’s disease, she delivered an unforgettable portrayal that etched her face into the hearts of Malayalees. While her first role was in the Hindi film Rules: Pyaar Ka Superhit Formula (2003), the Telugu movie Golmaal (2003) was the Mumbai-born actor’s first release. She subsequently acted in the Tamil movie Unnai Charanadaindhen, after which Meera bagged Thanmathra. Despite not being a Keralite, Malayalam cinema gave wings to her acting dreams, and in the past few years, she has mostly done only Malayalam films and television serials, cementing her position here. Adieu to MT Vasudevan Nair

Adieu to MT Vasudevan Nair

The words are silent now. But they will continue to run in our veins. MT Vasudevan Nair’s output as a literary figure is inestimable- be his works like Randanoozham (a retelling of a the Mahabharat from the point of view of Bheema) Irutinde Atmaav, Naalukettu or Asura Vitha. The human predicament was at the heart of MT Vasudevan’s writing. He gently pointed out to human foibles and how fragile relationships are in the face of patriarchal values and tradition. You see a lot of that in Nirmalyam and Neelathamara. You see his biting criticism of the exodus of poor Malayalees to the Gulf, the then promised land in Vilkaanund Swapnangal. Mammootty and MT Vasudevan Nair The MT I discovered was through the movies most ironically in IV Sasi films like Alkootatil Thaniye, Aksharangal and Aroodam. He was never didactic. He shone a light upon our frailties that shape us and break us in turns. If Balan K Nair is a flawed patriarch in Alkootathil who selfishly thought for the best for his son, Mammootty was …

A lens to the soul: A tribute to the visionary writer M.T. Vasudevan Nair

A lens to the soul: A tribute to the visionary writer M.T. Vasudevan Nair

I still remember the first time I met M.T. Vasudevan Nair in 1990, the then editor of Mathrubhumi periodicals, at his office during my college days. He was reading a book when I entered his room. He slowly raised his head, and his eyes scanned mine, a special observance I call ‘M.T. special’ (as if searching for something genuine and true). M.T. was widely known as a man of few words, but his gaze spoke volumes. As a budding photographer and artist, I had always admired his work, the way he wove stories like moving visuals with real-life characters. While showing him a few of my photographs, he chose one for the Mathrubhumi Weekly cover page. It was a big dream for every creative person – writers, photographers, and illustration artists – to showcase their work in Mathrubhumi Weekly. M.T. Literary giant ‘with his no-nonsense insistence on free speech’ – who was M T Vasudevan Nair | India News

Madath Thekkepat Vasudevan Nair, or more familiarly MT, the legendary author, editor and screenplay writer, breathed his last in Kozhikode, where he had spent the better part of his 91 years. MT arrived on the literary scene when the socially inclined fiction of pre-Independence India was waning to make way for a more personal and psychological angst. His stories about aristocratic joint families giving way to nuclear ones, nature being consumed by industry, male angst at a time of sudden social change, and women’s defiance of the establishment made him a towering icon not just in Kerala but in the larger cultural landscape of India. He was only 25 when he won the Kerala Sahitya Akademi for Naalukettu (1959), the story of an angry young man who wants to tear down his ancestral house because of how the family treated his rebellious mother. A decade later, MT won the Kendra Sahitya Akademi prize for ‘Kaalam’ (1969), a story about a man who feels all achievement is futile and is looking for a reason to keep …
