The NREGA Sangharsh Morcha and the Joint Platform for Agricultural and Rural Workers’ Unions on Wednesday announced an indefinite countrywide protest from July 1, demanding the repeal of the Viksit Bharat-Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) (VB-G RAM G). The VB-G RAM G scheme will come into force on July 1, replacing the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), launched by the Congress-led UPA government in 2006.  Announcing the protest at a press conference in New Delhi, the organisations rejected the government’s claim that the new scheme would increase the number of guaranteed work days from 100 to 125 per rural household. They cited the recent budgetary allocation to show that the funds, in the best-case scenario, would provide only 42 days of work in a financial year. The organisations said the protests would continue until the proposed law is repealed. Taking a decentralised approach, these would be held at the panchayat level, the activists said. New Delhi: The Ministry of Rural Development (MoRD) on Saturday reviewed preparedness of states and Union territories for the rollout of the Viksit Bharat–Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) Act, 2025 (VB-G RAM G), which will replace the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) from July 1, officials aware of the developments said. Centre reviews states’ VB-G RAM G preparedness The new law raises the statutory guarantee of wage employment for rural households from 100 days to 125 days in a financial year. Unlike MGNREGS, which was demand-driven, the new framework provides for state-wise normative allocations fixed annually by the Centre. The high-level meeting, chaired by MoRD secretary Rohit Kansal, was attended by senior ministry officials and representatives of states and UTs, the officials said. The Centre on Saturday (May 23, 2026) published draft rules under the Viksit Bharat – Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) Act, 2025 (VB–G RAM G) for public consultation, following the notification of the law’s implementation across all States and Union Territories from July 1. Framed under Section 33 and other relevant provisions of the Act, the draft rules have been placed in the public domain to facilitate wider stakeholder consultation before they are finalised. : The Viksit Bharat – Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin  or VB-G RAM G) law,  which has replaced the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), is no measure of reform, according to Thannatchi, a civil society organisation specialising in issues of local bodies.  Calling the abolition of the MGNREGA an “autocratic act” of snatching away democratic and Constitutional rights that workers had obtained after years of toil, the civil society organisation contended that it had come out in the open that the Union government had wanted to “take away” the rights of the people instead of removing practical difficulties and strengthening the old law.  Thannatchi demanded the retention of the MGNREGA and the withdrawal of the VB-G RAM G law.
