VCK under compulsion to consider local candidates, says Thirumavalavan

VCK) president Thol. Thirumavalavan. Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) president Thol. Thirumavalavan on Saturday said he had to consider candidates from the constituencies allotted to the party, since the seat allocation would be fewer than 10. “It is an important issue. We should field local candidates,” he said, addressing party members through a virtual meeting. Mr. Thirumavalavan also recalled the opinion of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) that the party lost in the Arakkonam and Vanur constituencies because its candidates were outsiders. “But the irony is that all six candidates were also outsiders, and four of them won. We lost in two constituencies by a narrow margin,” he said, requesting party members not to create any pressure and to allow him to choose the candidates independently. He also pointed out that the Communist parties leave it to the district committees to send a list of candidates, and the State committee would finalise the list. Mr. Thirumavalavan added that he was able to field as many as 25 candidates when the VCK was part of the People’s …

Amit Shah must take responsibility for Pahalgam terror attack: VCK chief

Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) founder and Chidambaram MP Thol. Thirumavalavan on Wednesday demanded that Union Home Minister Amit Shah step down from his post after 26 tourists were killed in a terrorist attack in Pahalgam in Kashmir. In a statement, he condemned the attack and said the people of Jammu and Kashmir have been denied their basic rights even after elections were conducted in 2024, and claimed that the incident throws light on the complete failure of the intelligence and security apparatus of the Indian state. “Many political leaders are kept under house arrest. However, the Modi government claims that democracy and peace have fully returned to Jammu and Kashmir. When Union Home Minister Amit Shah went to Jammu and Kashmir a few days ago, he said that terrorism has been completely eliminated. Yet, within a few days, this terrorist attack has taken place,” he said. When the Mumbai attacks happened in 2008, the then Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil resigned, taking responsibility, and similarly, Mr. Shah should also take responsibility now and resign from …

Stalin should discuss delimitation exercise with CMs of southern States: VCK leader

VCK president Thol. Thirumavalavan on Wednesday said that Chief Minister M.K. Stalin should also convene a meeting with Chief Ministers of other southern States to discuss the impact of the proposed delimitation exercise, which may lead to a reduction in the number of Lok Sabha seats especially for southern States. Interacting with media here, he said that he welcomed Mr. Stalin’s call for an all-party meeting on March 5 to discuss the impact of the proposed delimitation exercise, which will be based on population. “Mr. Stalin should also convene similar meetings with other CMs of southern States as it will help to create an awareness about the issue in the region. The Delimitation exercise should not be based on population alone,” he said. Terming the call for an all-party meeting on the issue as ‘historic’, Chidambaram MP said that the proposed exercise will be done after a similar exercise was carried out five decades ago by the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. The delimitation exercise then was based on the 20-Point Programme, which was introduced by …

PMK and VCK engage in a verbal spat over violence in Nemili village

A political friction has surfaced again between the PMK and the VCK over the recent violence at Nemili village in Ranipet district involving two groups, wherein two youth sustained serious burns. While PMK president Anbumani Ramadoss claimed that those who attacked the youth were either members or supporters of the VCK, the latter’s chief, Thol. Thirumavalavan, has denied it. The Chidambaram MP, in a statement on Saturday, accused Dr. Anbumani and PMK founder S. Ramadoss of attempting to create a social unrest and urged members of the public not to believe “their lies”. PMK spokesperson K. Balu countered this claim, arguing that several photographs that circulated on social media showed the accused wearing VCK scarves and posing with the VCK cadre. “Mr. Thirumavalavan has deviated from Dr. Ambedkar’s call to educate, organise and agitate. Instead, he has been encouraging his party’s youth to violate, misbehave and retaliate..,” he said, wondering how speaking about the incident would cause a social unrest. “It is because of the work done by the PMK and its founder that regular …
