‘I don’t want to see Shubman making runs at lesser strike rate’: R Ashwin says Gill’s vice-captaincy must be reviewed only after SA series | Cricket News

‘I don’t want to see Shubman making runs at lesser strike rate’: R Ashwin says Gill’s vice-captaincy must be reviewed only after SA series | Cricket News

Former India all-rounder R Ashwin expressed concerns over Shubman Gill’s indifferent form and the questions placed over his vice-captaincy tag after the Punjab batter’s lean patch extended to another innings in the ongoing South Africa T20Is. Although Gill chipped in with a fluent start in a 118-run chase in Dharamsala, the 26-year-old progressively lost his rhythm and fell for 28 off as many deliveries. Ashwin said that India would not find it easy to drop the Punjab batter mid-way through the series after being naming him as deputy to captain Suryakumar Yadav who has also been woefully out of runs. The former World Cup winner added that a decision on Gill’s position in the team must only be reviewed after the remaining games in Lucknow and Ahmedabad this series. “I am a little concerned. Shubman is not only the opener but also the vice-captain. How will you remove the vice-captain? It is going to be an incredibly tough decision. If you have to take that decision, inside this series you can’t bring [Sanju] Samson because …

Jasprit Bumrah in action© BCCI After the intense two months of the IPL will be over, the Indian men’s cricket team will be touring England for a five-match Test series. This is going to be a crucial series for India as it will be the beginning of the 2025-27 cycle of the World Test Championship for them. Rohit Sharma and co failed to complete a hat-trick of reaching the WTC finals after losing to Australia in the five-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy earlier in January. The series was truly a debacle for India as they ended up losing 1-3. As the selection committee gears up to shortlist players, a report from The Indian Express recently revealed that pacer Jasprit Bumrah is not likely to be appointed as India’s vice-captain against England. The pacer was appointed Rohit’s deputy in the Tests against Australia and even led India in the first and the fifth match. After the Australia Tests, Bumrah was out of action due to a back injury and recently returned to the field during the …

Suryakumar Yadav Breaks Silence On Hardik Pandya’s Vice-Captaincy Snub: “We Have Lot Of…”

India T20 skipper Suryakumar Yadav on Tuesday said Hardik Pandya remains very much part of the leadership group despite the elevation of Axar Patel as his deputy. Following the retirement of Rohit Sharma form T20s last year, Hardik was tipped to lead the side but Suryakumar was given that responsibility after the arrival of new coach Gautam Gambhir. Ahead of the five T20s against England, Hardik was removed as vice-captain and Axar was handed that responsibility. We have been playing for a very long time right now,” said Suryakumar on the eve of their match against England at Eden Gardens. “I still remember 2018 when I went back to Mumbai Indians. And till today, it’s just the added responsibility which I have got,” said Suryakumar who led India to nine wins out of 10 games after being elevated to the skipper’s role. …

“Slap On The Face…”: Internet Divided Over Shubman Gill Vice-Captaincy For India’s Champions Trophy Squad

“Slap On The Face…”: Internet Divided Over Shubman Gill Vice-Captaincy For India’s Champions Trophy Squad

Team India’s Champions Trophy 2025 squad was announced on Saturday, with captain Rohit Sharma and chief selector Ajit Agarkar addressing the media via a press conference. Shubman Gill being made vice-captain was one of the major talking points, while Jasprit Bumrah was provisionally included despite injury concerns. However, Vijay Hazare Trophy run machine Karun Nair was overlooked despite scoring 752 runs in seven innings. The selection decisions divided opinion on social media, with fans not hesitating to put forth their views on the 15-man side. Shubman Gill was confirmed as vice-captain for the Champions Trophy, continuing on in the role from India’s previous ODI series, against Sri Lanka. “A slap on the face of haters and illogical audiences who were mixing formats,” said a passionate fan, regarding Gill’s appointment. Meanwhile, the decision to not include Karun Nair has not gone down well with several sections of the fanbase, who feel that the 33-year-old should’ve been rewarded for his purple patch. “Karun Nair deserves a spot. Don’t agree with what Ajit said. Players score …

‘No clue why Hardik Pandya was stripped of vice-captaincy’: Dinesh Karthik | Cricket News

‘No clue why Hardik Pandya was stripped of vice-captaincy’: Dinesh Karthik | Cricket News

Former India wicket-keeper Dinesh Karthik is perplexed that all-rounder Hardik Pandya is not an automatic vice-captaincy pick for the white-ball formats anymore. When India recently announced a near full-strength T20I side for the upcoming five-match series against England, Hardik was snubbed of the deputy’s role to skipper Suryakumar Yadav. Instead, spin all-rounder Axar Patel was promoted as the new T20I vice-captain of the side. India had not named a vice-captain for their last two T20I assignments in South Africa and against Bangladesh at home last September. In his first stint as captain in Sri Lanka, Suryakumar was assisted by Shubman Gill who has since lost his spot in the T20I set-up. The decision to hand over captaincy to Suryakumar came as a surprise since Pandya led the Indian T20 side post the 2022 World Cup in Australia, and was expected to do so for the 2024 T20 World Cup till he injured his ankle during the 50-over World Cup in October 2023. Pandya made his comeback in March when he led Mumbai Indians in the …

India Test Squad vs Bangladesh: BCCI’s Vice-Captaincy Decision Baffles Everyone

Amid the chatter around Jasprit Bumrah being potentially rested for the 2-match Test series against Bangladesh, the marquee pacer surprisingly found a place in the squad for the first Test. Wicket-keeper batter Rishabh Pant also marked his return to the Test side after nearly 20 months out as India announced their 16-man squad for the series opener on Sunday. While some big names returned to the squad, some prominent names missed out too. However, another decision from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selection committee that raised eyebrows was the absence of a designated vice-captain.  When India took on England in their last Test assignment, Jasprit Bumrah was named the vice-captain. However, no such role was allotted by the selection committee this time, making fans wonder what changed.  Bumrah is seen as one of the leaders in the team, alongside the likes of KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, and Virat Kohli. While Kohli doesn’t want to be officially given a leadership role, Rahul and Pant are also in fray for India’s …

Pakistan Cricket Board Breaks Silence On Shaheen ‘Turning Down’ Vice-Captaincy Row

Shaheen Afridi (L) and Babar Azam© AFP The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Saturday said the national selectors never offered vice-captaincy role to Shaheen Shah Afridi in the run-up to the next month’s T20 World Cup in the Americas. Several reports claimed that Afridi was given a chance to be the deputy of Babar Azam when the Pakistan squad for the ICC showpiece was picked on Friday, but the left-arm pacer rejected the proposal. “The selectors were shocked with this news because when they held their nearly two-hour online meeting on Friday, six out of seven selectors were not in favour of having a vice-captain to Babar Azam,” a source close to one of the national selectors told PTI. “The minutes of the meeting are on record as per the instructions of the PCB Chairman. So, today’s news about Shaheen declining the vice-captaincy came as a big shock to the selectors,” he said. However, it was revealed that in March a selector in his individual capacity had asked Afridi if he would be …

Hardik Pandya Center Of Fresh Attack, Irfan Pathan Questions Decision To Give Him Vice-Captaincy

India all-rounder Hardik Pandya continues to be at the center of criticism. After much debate over his place in the Indian team for the T20 World Cup 2024, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selection committee awarded him a role in the 15-man squad for the showpiece event, despite poor form in IPL 2024. In fact, Hardik was also named the vice-captain of the team, a decision that hasn’t gone down well with former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan. Aiming a fresh attack at Hardik, Irfan questioned the BCCI over the exceptions that the board made for the Mumbai Indians captain. Irfan even pointed out the Shreyas Iyer, Ishan Kishan scenario where the duo were forced out of the Indian team until they proved themselves in domestic cricket. However, no such measure was opted for Hardik who also remained away from domestic cricket before making a return to the Indian team. “Previously, Hardik Pandya held the captaincy, but Rohit Sharma took over for T20 matches. Post T20 World Cup, there was a new …

Punjab Kings Issue Clarification After Major Jitesh Sharma-Sam Curran Vice-Captaincy Controversy

A major controversy erupted at the start of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 match between Punjab Kings and Rajasthan Royals after Sam Curran came out for the toss, representing the home side, since primary captain Shikhar Dhawan had picked up a niggle. Seeing Curran alongside RR skipper Sanju Samson, however, was surprising to many as the franchise had earlier suggested that Jitesh Sharma was their vice-captain, by sending him for the pre-season captains’ photoshoot. Seeing Curran lead the side against Rajasthan, hence, upset many fans, with PBKS facing heat on social media. As anger grew on social media, Punjab Kings coach Sanjay Bangar issued a clarification, suggesting Jitesh wasn’t their ‘designated vice-captain’. His presence in the captains’ photoshoot was only due to Sam Curran’s late arrival from the United Kingdom, he suggested. “Jitesh wasn’t the designated vice-captain. The impression could have been because he attended the captain’s seminar or meeting at the start of the tournament. But the thought was always that since Sam had led the team last year as well, he was …
