Anand Vihar decongestion: 1.2km road revamp on cards

The Delhi government has initiated the process for decongestion and beautification of the area around Anand Vihar Interstate bus Terminus (ISBT) — a perpetual congestion and pollution hotspot in east Delhi. Under the plan, for which bids were invited last week, 1.2km road from EDM Mall foot over bridge to Anand Vihar U-turn will be redeveloped, said senior government officials. Anand Vihar is consistently ranked as one of the most severe pollution and traffic congestion hotspots in the Delhi. A fire ripped through a residential building in east Delhi’s Vivek Vihar early Sunday, leaving nine people from two families dead, including a toddler, officials said. The incident was reported at 3.48 am at a four-storey building in Vivek Vihar Phase-I, following which police, fire and disaster management teams rushed to the spot. Initial investigation into the incident suggested an explosion in an air conditioner (AC) unit triggered the deadly blaze. However, further probe is on. Among the deceased was a family of five — Arvind Jain, 60; Anita Jain, 58; ⁠Nishant Jain, 35; Anchal Jain, 33; Akash Jain, 1 — who lived on the second floor (back side of the building). Another deceased was Shikha Jain, 45, living on the first floor. Another family of three — Nitin Jain, 50; Shailey Jain, 48; and their son Samyank Jain, 25 — was also killed in the fire on the third floor. The Delhi government is planning to launch a Yamuna cruise service on February 20, as the flagship event of celebrations marking the first anniversary of the Bharatiya Janata Party coming to power, said officials. Workers prepare a cruise ship, ahead of the launch of cruise service on Yamuna river, in New Delhi. (PTI) “We plan to launch the cruise on February 20 and a trial run is planned for February 16 or 17,” said an official. The service is part of the government’s river rejuvenation and tourism development plan. According to officials, the one-hour cruise will operate between Sonia Vihar and Jagatpur, covering a five-kilometre stretch of the Yamuna. It will offer passengers a panoramic views of the ghats and the natural landscape along the riverbanks, said officials. The boat for the cruise can accommodate 32 people, including two crew members. The jetties will include boarding zones, ticket counters, and waiting areas. Delhi’s air quality remained dangerously high on Tuesday, with the overall Air Quality Index (AQI) at 378 at 8 am, placing the city in the ‘very poor’ category, according to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). This marks a slight improvement from Monday, when the AQI had peaked at 427 in the ‘severe’ category. Despite the marginal dip, large parts of the capital were still shrouded in thick, toxic smog, reducing visibility and causing discomfort for residents, reported news agency ANI.  Prominent areas recorded alarming pollution levels: India Gate registered an AQI of 380 and Sarai Kale Khan 359, both in the ‘very poor’ range. Ghazipur and Anand Vihar fared worse, with AQIs around 410, categorised as ‘severe’. According to AQI categorisation, 0-50 is `good`, 51-100 `satisfactory`, 101-200 `moderate`, 201-300 `poor`, 301-400 `very poor`, and 401-500 `severe`.
