VFS Global visa operations: 20-member EU team came to India with focus on gaps, problems and remedies | Express Investigations News

Internal reports of a 20-member EU delegation’s visit and questionnaires filled by 11 member states reveal several “common problems” in VFS Global’s India operations — from wrong data entry to appointment slots allegedly sold by staff. And, every country that took up these shortcomings with VFS reported the same result: temporary improvement followed by relapse. These reports and questionnaires were among the latest batch of Freedom of Information (FOI) records received on May 12 by Lighthouse Reports from the EU headquarters in Brussels. They show that Slovakia, for instance, told the EU delegation it was switching to a different service provider altogether because of “consistent problems” with VFS. According to EU records, this is what the team found during its visit to India in October 2023: Member states flagged “laxity in following instructions, documents not arranged in proper sequence, scanning-related issues, and IT infrastructure and bandwidth problems”. Wrong data entry, missing biometrics, incorrect checklists and wrongly transferred fees. Complaints from Lithuania and Poland of appointment slots being sold by VFS staff — Poland said it …

Speaking at the Capitol Hill Summit 2026 organised by the US-India Friendship Council, Verma said the relationship remains “one of the most consequential” in the world but is entering a more uncertain phase. Coach stuck in UAE, 20-hour road trip during war, visa trouble, cancelled training camp – Iraq’s route to football showpiece

Difficulties and struggles along the way tend to make achievements sweeter. Such was the case with the Iraqi team that made it to the FIFA World Cup after 40 years after beating Bolivia 2-1 in an intercontinental qualifier in Monterrey, Mexico. The country has had a turbulent few decades, ravaged by war and sectarian violence. But the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, in which Iraq isn’t directly involved, also cast a big shadow on their World Cup aspirations, and it was doubtful whether the team would even reach the venue for the all-important match. Team officials had even asked FIFA to postpone the qualifier, a request that was rejected. Consider the situation: The war in the region forced a closure of Iraqi airspace and the team had to travel by road to Jordan, reported to be a 20-hour journey. From there, the team travelled to Lisbon, Portugal and from there to Monterrey. It needed pressure from Iraq’s Australian head coach Graham Arnold to persuade FIFA to organise a chartered flight to get to Mexico. …

Why Delhi High Court said that Drug Case of Foreign National is ‘Beyond Getting High’

5 min readNew DelhiMar 30, 2026 11:14 AM IST The Delhi High Court recently denied bail to a foreign national in a heroin case, observing that it is not just a matter of making someone ecstatic or ‘high’, but the money involved in such peddling of drug trafficking has links to terrorism and affects the economy of the country. Justice Girish Kathpalia was hearing the bail application of a Nigerian, James, who was charged under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS). “While dealing with the cases pertaining to narcotics and psychotropic substances, the court has to keep in mind that peddling in such substances is not just a matter of making someone ecstatic or ‘high’. Justice Girish Kathpalia found that there is no passport or visa, or any other identity document of the accused person. ‘No identity …

World volleyball body flags visa snags, ₹3.13 crore dues with IOA, warns of eroding confidence in India | Sport-others News

Warning that international federations could lose confidence in India’s claim of being a reliable sporting destination, the International Volleyball Association (FIVB) claimed that many athletes who recently competed in a Pro Tour event in Bhubaneswar were ‘denied visas’. In a letter to Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president PT Usha dated March 18, also marked to the Sports Ministry, the world body also recommended escalating the issue with the government as it is ‘critical’ to ‘provide assurances’ for visiting athletes that Indian visas can be obtained in a ‘timeline and professional manner’. The FIVB did not specify the nationalities of the participants who faced visa problems. An IOA official said they replied to the FIVB letter on Friday, requesting relevant documents and contracts. “We need to study the visa issue properly and understand the reasons for the problems they allegedly faced. We are in contact with the federation for this,” the official said. Steve Tutton, the FIVB General Sports Director, also sought Usha’s intervention in recovering outstanding dues of $335,000 (approx Rs 3.13 crore) from the …
