Tamil Nadu’s Rajesh Ramesh stormed to victory in the men’s 400m, while Animesh Kujur swept the men’s 100m and 200m race at the Indian Grand Prix 2 athletics meet held at the LNCPE Athletics Stadium in Trivandrum on Saturday. Returning from an injury, Ramesh started the year with a brilliant time of 45.77s to win the 400m title. He also became the first Indian to dip below 46s this season. Jay Kumar (46.53) and Rince Joseph (46.72s) were some prominent runners in the men’s 400m event. In the men’s 100m, Animesh Kujur stopped the clock at 10.31 seconds to finish on top. Odisha’s Animesh was among the few elite names in the line up as most of the prominent names decided to skip the event owing to their packed schedule. The Indian team will be heading to the Asian Athletics Championship scheduled to take place in Gumi, Republic of Korea later this month. Asian Games medallist, Vithya Ramraj, as expected, sailed smoothly over the 400m hurdles to improve the meet record and win berth for the upcoming Asian Athletics Championship. Tamil Nadu’s 26 years old international on Wednesday clocked 56.04 seconds to win gold at the 28th National Federation Senior Athletics Championships here at Maharaja’s College Stadium. Vithya’s winning time was better than the previous meet record of 57.21 seconds clocked by Saritaben Gayakwad in 2019 in Patiala, Punjab. The Asian athletics championships qualification time in women’s 400m hurdles was 57.80 seconds. Vithya had also won silver in the women’s 400m flat the previous day. In the men’s 400m hurdles, it was a disappointing day for the winner, Yashas P, representing Karnataka in the competition, who clocked 49.32 seconds to miss the Asian qualification time of 49.19 seconds. Asian Games medalist Ancy Sojan claimed the gold medal at the National Open Athletics Championships with a big personal best while Vithya Ramraj broke the 39-year-old meet record on the final day on Monday. Ancy recorded her personal best of 6.71m in the women’s long jump placing her third in the all-time best jumps behind Shaili Singh (6.76m) and Anju Bobby George (6.83m). She won the Best Female Athlete award at the meet. Asian Games medallist Vithya Ramraj also erased the long-standing women’s 400m hurdles meet record. She crossed the finish line at 56.23 seconds which was better than the previous meet record of 56.80 seconds set by legendary sprinter PT Usha in 1985. Tamil Nadu’s Nithin cinched 200m gold with a meet record time of 20.66 seconds to be named best male athlete. Vikrant Malik won the gold medal in men’s Javelin Throw with 80.02m while Sachin Yadav won the silver with 79.80m.
