Amid INDIA bloc’s concerns over EVM tampering in the recently concluded Maharashtra Assembly elections, Maharashtra’s Additional Chief Electoral Officer Kiran Kulkarni said in all 1,440 Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trails (VVPATs) were verified during the last month’s state assembly polls with their results matching perfectly with Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) counts. A VVPAT is connected with an EVM through a printer port, which records vote data and counters in a paper slip to verify the correct recording of vote by the machine. VVPATs are intended as an independent verification system for voting machines. The SLUs will have to be sealed and kept in storage for 45 days after the declaration of the Lok Sabha election results, the poll body said. Before this revision, only three components of the EVM, the ballot unit, the control unit and the VVPAT, were being stored for 45 days after the results. The SLU is meant to upload the name and symbol of the candidates contesting from a particular constituency on VVPAT or paper trail machines. Calling for greater accountability in using technology in conduct of polls, the Congress on Wednesday questioned the Election Commission`s “reluctance” to engage with INDIA parties over their demand that the number of VVPATs prescribed be steadily increased towards 100 per cent, reported news agency PTI.
