Jason Gillespie flaps his arms to disturb VVS Laxman’s concentration during 2000/01 Kolkata Test and what happened next? ‘…He had this stupid grin on his face’

2 min readUpdated: Jan 30, 2026 06:35 PM IST Former Australian cricketer Jason Gillespie is well known for his fast bowling and his impeccable ability to deliver in-swingers, out-swingers and his ability to reverse the older ball. However, despite all the abilities he possessed in his arsenal, he tried a different method to pick the wicket of VVS Laxman during the famous Kolkata Eden Gardens Test in the 2000/01 series, when the right-hander played a marathon 284-run knock. But what did he do? Gillespie tried to flap his arms before delivering the ball to disturb the concentration of Laxman. “Running into bowl in 2000/01 in Kolkata when Dravid and Laxman were scoring a stupid amount of runs against us, so I thought I would run in and flap my arms like a condor running into a ball to put VVS Laxman off,” Gillespie recalled in the Fast Bowling Cartel podcast. “I have done it, and then he (Laxman) puntbunted (played) it to the offside and ran through. He had this stupid grin on his face, …

How world record smasher Vaibhav Suryavanshi was nurtured by VVS Laxman and Rahul Dravid

How world record smasher Vaibhav Suryavanshi was nurtured by VVS Laxman and Rahul Dravid

It was perhaps a BCCI’s U-19 one-day Challenger tournament that changed Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s cricket career. VVS Laxman was impressed with his game and selected him for U-19 quadrangular series against England and Bangladesh. On Monday night, he became the youngest player to smash a IPL hundred when he ransacked the likes of Mohammad Siraj, Ishant Sharma, Prasidh Krishna, Rashid Khan, and Washington Sundar. But in one of the U19 games for India B in the series, he would break down and cry in the dressing room after getting out for 36. It was then that VVS Laxman intervened. “In one of the games, Vaibhav was run out for 36. So, he started crying in the dressing room. When Laxman saw this, he came to him and said, ‘We don’t only see the runs here. We see people who have the skill for the long run.’ Laxman saw his potential very quickly. The BCCI has backed him too,” his coach Manoj Ojha had told Sportstar. Story continues below this ad Speaking to The Indian Express, the …

When floodlight failure hit first-ever IPL match in Kolkata and VVS Laxman, Ricky Ponting slammed ‘shocking’ Eden Gardens pitch | Ipl News

The Indian Premier League carnival is set to enter its 18th season with the first match of IPL 2025 set to be played between defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the iconic Eden Gardens. For the first time in 17 years since the inaugural IPL match between KKR and RCB at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on April 18, 2008, the two teams will lock horns in an IPL season opener on Saturday. While the opening match of the T20 tournament itself was a spectacle worth remembering where KKR’s Brendon McCullum slammed a spellbinding 158 not out against RCB, the first-ever IPL match in Kolkata a few days later wasn’t short on the drama quotient either. April 20, 2008: When lights went down at Eden on IPL debut Only the third night into the tournament, KKR were at the Eden Gardens to host the now-defunct Deccan Chargers in their first IPL match at the venue. On a spicy pitch that wasn’t conducive to the batters, VVS Laxman’s Deccan unit tottered …

IPL Auction 2025: Meet 13-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi, rated highly by VVS Laxman, set to play for Rahul Dravid’s Rajasthan Royals | Cricket News

Vaibhav Surayvanshi was in an India U-19 team meeting ahead of their Asia Cup preparation when a member of the coaching staff broke the news to the 13-year-old that he had been picked by Rajasthan Royals in the IPL mega auction on Monday. “I am speechless…I don’t know what to say. It’s a massive thing for our family. I had a gut feeling that he would get picked but never in my wildest dreams would I have thought that there would be a bidding war,” Vaibhav’s father Sanjeev Suryavanshi tells The Indian Express. The youngster grabbed eyeballs recently when he became the youngest batter (13 years, 288 days) to record an international century, scoring 104 off 62 balls in a Youth Test for India Under-19 against Australia U-19 in Chennai. The left-hander’s century came in 58 balls, making it the fastest Youth Test hundred by an Indian and the second-fastest overall in the world. “Everything is coming as a flashback to me. I was a cricket tragic myself. But had to kill that dream when …

‘There was a lot more blue in the crowd than green’: VVS Laxman explains why India team find support in SA, other countries | Cricket News

India’s stand-in coach VVS Laxman on Friday said that the aggressive style that the team plays is one of the primary reasons for fans all of over the one to support the Men in Blue wherever they go. “What we have seen in these three matches is the fearless approach of this team. During any tours to any foreign country, we play and try to entertain the crowd. And we always feel that we are playing at home,” Laxman said during a reception hosted for the Indian team on Thursday night. “The reason for that is all the wonderful fans of the Indian cricket team – the Diaspora of India who settled down in various countries but still love the Indian team and the Indian cricketers. I don’t know if the support was for the home team or for our team (in SA). There was a lot more blue in the crowd than actually green,” Laxman said. A lovely evening at Joburg 😊 The Consulate General of India, Johannesburg hosted #TeamIndia for dinner yesterday ahead …

VVS Laxman To Be India’s Head Coach in South Africa

VVS Laxman will be India’s coach for South Africa tour which is set to begin next month. He will step into the position while the regular head coach Gautam Gambhir will be accompanying the India squad for the Border Gavaskar Trophy. Sairaj Bahutule, Hrishikesh Kanitkar and Subhadep Ghosh will be part of Laxman’s coaching staff for the four-match T20I series who were part of the India emerging side that took the Asia emerging cup tournament in Oman. Sitanshu Kotak of Saurashtra and Mazhar Moidu of Kerala, both associated with the NCA, have accompanied the Ruturaj Gaikwad-led India A team to Australia. Ruturaj Gaikwad (image: X) “Next month, there’s a needless four-match T20 series in South Africa before the tour to Australia. There will also be an ‘A’ team touring Australia next month, so effectively about 50 to 60 players will not be available for their State teams in the premier national tournament, the Ranji Trophy,” said former India skipper Sunil Gavaskar. One upside for the tour, coming as it does ahead of the IPL auction, …

When Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman stamped a record Duleep Trophy partnership, two months before Eden Gardens 2001 | Cricket News

If one turns the clock back to 2001 in Indian cricket circles, two individuals and an iconic venue will almost always prop up for long discussions. When VVS Laxman and Rahul Dravid convened mid-pitch on day three of a tumultuous Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test at the Eden Gardens in March 2001, everything was on the line for Sourav Ganguly’s side. After slumping to a defeat against Australia in the first Test of the three-match series in Mumbai, India had allowed the visitors to wrest control within the first two days in Kolkata. Posting 445 in the first innings, Australia skittled India for 171 and enforced the follow-on. To regain the title, India had to tide the odds – only twice before had a team won after being asked to follow-on. India had slipped to 202 for four before tea on Day 3 after Ganguly’s dismissal. In at 6, Dravid joined Laxman to see off the day at 254/4. The middle-order bulwarks soon wiped out Day 4 from Australia’s bowling map as they batted to 589/4 and …

India Coach Application Deadline Ends: No Top Foreign Names Apply, VVS Laxman Not Interested, Gautam Gambhir…

File image of former Indian cricket team star Gautam Gambhir© AFP The deadline for applying for the post of Indian men’s cricket team chief coach ended on Monday but both the BCCI and the top name in its wishlist, Gautam Gambhir chose to keep mum on the development. After guiding Kolkata Knight Riders to their third IPL trophy on Sunday, it is but natural that Gambhir’s name is getting more momentum. While both interested parties haven’t said anything on record, the BCCI, it seems, doesn’t have too many quality options available at the moment. It is understood that no notable foreign name has applied for the post, especially after BCCI secretary Jay Shah made it clear that the Board is looking at someone who has risen through the ranks and knows the domestic structure. It could be safely said that the BCCI’s primary target was VVS Laxman, the National Cricket Academy head, but the stylish Hyderabadi seems not interested in a full time position which requires him to available for 10 months a …
