Kerala Waqf Board reconstitution: Pinarayi Vijayan accuses UDF govt of ‘surrendering to Sangh Parivar diktats’

Kerala’s Leader of the Opposition Pinarayi Vijayan | Photo Credit: Nirmal Harindran Accusing the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) government in Kerala of having “surrendered completely to the Sangh Parivar’s diktats”, Leader of the Opposition Pinarayi Vijayan has said the State government has “betrayed” Kerala’s secular society and minorities by deciding to reconstitute the Waqf Board in accordance with the Union government’s Unified Waqf Management, Empowerment, Efficiency and Development (UMEED) Act, or the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025. Addressing a press conference in Thiruvananthapuram on Friday (July 17, 2026), Mr. Vijayan said the (previous) Left Democratic Front (LDF) had taken a stand against the act and kept two posts in the 11-member body vacant. The amended Act had mandated the inclusion of two non-Muslim members in the Waqf Board, a move against which several pleas are pending in the Supreme Court. The UDF government has shown needless hurry in agreeing to reconstitute the board as per the amended Act, despite the pending legal challenges, he said. “The 2025 amendment was part of a Sangh Parivar agenda …

Explained: Supreme Court holds Sajjadanashin, Mutawalli as distinct posts under Waqf | Explained News

Explained: Supreme Court holds Sajjadanashin, Mutawalli as distinct posts under Waqf | Explained News

The Supreme Court recently held that the positions of a Sajjadanashin and the Mutawalli are not the same, even if one person may sometimes wear both hats. The bench comprising Justices MM Sundresh and Vipul M Pancholi, on April 2, held that “Sajjadanashin is the spiritual head of Waqf and declaration of Sajjadanashin is a religious affair, however, role of Mutawalli of a Waqf only pertains to the administration and management of the Waqf.” The order resolves a private succession dispute and also echoes a larger understanding of who actually controls a shrine. Peer Pasha Khadri was the Sajjadanashin, the spiritual head, of the Hazarath Mardane-e-Gaib Dargah in Shivanasamudra, Karnataka. He had designated his eldest son as his successor. But that son died before him, in 1980. Eventually, in 1981, at a gathering of spiritual leaders and community elders, Peer Pasha Khadri did what such figures had done for centuries—he wrote out a Khilafatnama, which is a formal document conferring spiritual authority by recording his nomination of his eldest grandson as the next Sajjadanashin. His …

But with the sheer number of properties, officials say it is an uphill task. Officials told The Hindu that the thousands of properties must be uploaded and subsequently verified before the deadline. According to officials, the pressing concen stems from the fact that the erstwhile composite Medak district accounts for a particularly large number of waqf properties. The district alone, they said, has around 28,000 properties. Hyderabad also has a significant number of such properties that require documentation and verification. Officials pointed out that the process of verification presents an additional challenge. The designated checker and approver must be a government employee and cannot be an outsider. As a result, inspectors and assistant …
